How did the buddy cop movie come about?

Lethal Weapon is on tv right now. What was the first buddy cop movie?

Also, what was considered the first “blockbuster action movie”? Not talking about the “epic” genre like Ben-Hur.

Wikipedia says that Dirty Harry is considered “the action film’s first true archetype.”
