What do you think about salvia?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) November 12th, 2008

13 states and several local governments have banned or otherwise regulated. For example in Florida, it is a felony (15 years jail time) to possess or sell it.

There are no known studies suggesting that salvia is addictive or its users prone to overdose or abuse and Reports of salvia-related emergency room admissions are virtually nonexistent, even though some 1.8 million people had tried it, (up to 7% of college students).

(Almost all of this information came from this article and is pretty much directly quoted).

That’s great, syz, thanks for the interesting reading! (i had never read any first-hand testimonials before. pretty interesting stuff!)
This is actually a very different question. I’m not asking people if they’re tried it. I’m asking them what their opinion is about it. I could ask people what they think about death, I’m sure very few would have to have tried it to answer…~

really? wow, my mother always had salvia in the yard back in the 1970s. what? you smoke it? seriously?

arnbev959's avatar

@charlie: not that kind of salvia (sage.) Salvia divinorum.

I don’t understand why everyone always wants to regulate everything. Most scheduled substances are harmless, or near harmless, or less harmless than a lot of unscheduled drugs.

I don’t care for it I did it once I didn’t feel anything though I know they’ll sell it to people over 18 here in Cali

If it grows from the ground it should be legal.

I think its absolute bullshit. There is no reason what-so-ever to ban this drug.(i do agree with regulating) Salvia has no adverse effects on the body and no one has ever overdosed.
Its not a recreational drug by any means what so ever so theres really no abuse of it. And honestly ive youve done it once you would come to the same conclusion “damn this is definitely a once in a blue moon type of thing”
Why ban it then? Its a hallucinogen and makes people think differently. We wouldnt want that now would we?

I personally dont care for it much (it can get scary and you sometimes forget you even took a drug which only adds to it), id rather smoke DMT for that type of experience, but it should still be legal for those who chose to partake.
If your thinking about trying salvia, please have a sitter. And do it somewhere safe.

what’s DMT?

buster's avatar

DMT is like TNT for the head.

El_Cadejo's avatar

heh fun fun. DMT=Dimethyltryptamine its a fast acting hallucangen like salvia, but much happier and more intense. Heres a explanation of the trip from Terrence Mckenna

Part 2

I wish they sold mushrooms in head shops like they do salvia.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@jessturtle23 your not alone there.

I don’t think it’s the government’s job to legislate whether people should be able to smoke marijuana, salvia, etc.

Sometimes it seems like congressmen/women sit around brainstorming the next fun thing they can take away from everyone…

jessturtle23's avatar

Weed being illegal makes criminals out of people that may not do anything else illegal. Salvia hasn’t been tested as much as marijuana has and I don’t think any kids under 18 need to smoke either.

Let’s just sum up this thread right here: The War On Drugs = Bullshit

I think that, due to it’s hallucinogenic properties, Salvia ought to be regulated like alcohol or tobacco. From my own personal experience (I didn’t even know of its existence until I visited some friends in Canada), it can be pretty powerful and people should not be doing it while driving vehicles or, say, while their brains are developing.

arnbev959's avatar

@generalspecific: Amen to that!

Bugabear's avatar

I dont think its good because it can cause heart problems. But other than that I think its fine because it doesnt make you crazy or anything

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Bugabear source on the heart problems?

Bugabear's avatar

@uberbatman A britsh newspaper I read while on vacation. The reporter tried it and said “It was a great mind fusing experience that lasted a incredible 5 minutes. However I wanted see if this didnt have any negative side effects so I asked a leading expert in the medical field who was doing some experiments with salvia.” I dont really remember the article well except for that little bit and the doctor person saying something about causing heart issues. Anyways I was talking to one of my friends and he said he used to use it but switched back to marijuana. Personal I think it better for to do slavia than smoke a joint or two a day (he lives in Vancouver). But I dont really know much about drugs.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Bugabear salvia has been used for many years in china to prevent heart disease is why i asked for sources.

Bugabear's avatar

@uberbatman well I didnt know that but again Im not an expert. And is this the page that says that it’s good for your heart?

El_Cadejo's avatar

yea, i saw that when i was looking for sources stating it was bad :P
