Giving up dairy, any suggestions or expereinces?

Asked by nocountry2 (3689points) December 20th, 2008

I have been reading a lot about how dairy can make a more acidic environment in your blood, and how cancer thrives in such an environment, and have decided to give it up. Dairy used to be a huge part of my diet – has anybody given it up with positive results? Negative? Any highly recommended alternatives?

I had to cut it out of my diet when I was breastfeeding my son. (He’s lactose intolerant) I was miserable. I love dairy!! So good luck to you. I could never do it permanantly.

Calcium. But the good news is that lots of fiber supplements have calcium in them. Also watch your vitamin D. Rice milk is pretty darn tasty, and I’m neither lactose intolerant, or vegan.

Soy yogurt is actually quite good, so is soy ice cream. They are both very creamy! I like rice milk over my cereal, I’ve also used it in pancakes and for cookies and it didn’t make any difference in the taste or texture. From what I understand there are some great cheeses made of tofu. You might want to pick up a copy of Skinny Bitch and or Skinny Bitch in the Kitch, these are two great resources. Good luck!

Good luck, I’ve heard that eliminating dairy has great benefits.
I was reading about this very thing yesterday and found this:
For vegetarians and others who want to avoid a high intake of animal products, there are a number of plant and animal sources of calcium. Leafy green vegetables and many nuts are high in calcium. If you are using leafy greens such as broccoli, spinach, chard, or mustard greens, be aware that they also contain oxalic acid, which can interfere with calcium absorption. To get the full benefit of the greens, cook them so that the oxalic acid is neutralized. In the case of nuts, remember that they are also high in fats, although the fats are healthy for you as long as you do not over consume. Many soy products are also fortified with calcium, including tofu and soy milk.

Thanks guys! (minus goober, wtf). I actually just read skinny bitch, and along with the Dr. Weil and countless scientific articles I read on a regular basis, it was just something I couldn’t ignore any longer – no matter how much I love dairy, I love and respect my body more.

@Goober- You gotta publish that stuff or start your own radio show. You’re possessed with the dairy spirit.

Go easy on the soy, it may also cause breast cancer because it mimics estrogen in the body. I dont think you need to give it up entirely, maybe cut it in half. You can also take a pH test and find out if you even need to be worrying about this.

nocountry2's avatar

Holy cow I wasn’t even aware I could do that!

I know this is an old question, but I’m lactose intolerant and I gave up dairy relatively easily a few years ago. I used to drink tall glasses of whole milk every day and eat lots and lots of pizza. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too hard to give it up, and I’ve had pretty good success maintaining it. However, I was motivated because lactose would make me sick. What emilyrose said about soy is interesting, and I would add that a naturopathic doctor told me that men in particular should avoid soy products because of that estrogen effect. I think it’s less of a concern for women though. One thing I recently discovered is that Cabot-brand aged cheddar (and aged cheddar in general) is completely lactose free, so that has brought some dairy joy back into my life. Sorry, that was a rambling answer – not an uncommon thing here on Fluther!

@picklez—I didn’t know that about Cabot. That is awesome! I am from Vermont—- I love Cabot cheese!
