Did you ever accomplish your childhood dreams and goals?

Asked by vanelokz (423points) December 23rd, 2008 from iPhone

This is for the older crowd. Did you ever have dreams of what you wanted to do with your life when you got older? Did you accomplish them? Or did you get screwed over by other obstacles in life?

I’ve climbed a few mountains.
I’ve jumped (willingly) from an airplane.
I’ve gone to some really cool places.
I have children.
I went to college.
I have a good life, and been down some very rocky roads.

Overall, yes. I guess I’ll pass on the rich and famous thing. Now, being a grown up, it’s not as cool as it looked when I was 10.

One, so far. Got another 49.65 years to take care of the others.

Erm, no – I’m not a hairdresser/actress…...or Frida from ABBA :(

As I am not a famous fashion designer…no. That’s ok, though. I’ll take being a mom anyday : )

I was supposed to change the world. I wonder If I’m going to do it through my grand children? ;-)

I am still in the process of taking over the world. so no, not yet. But I did turn out to be pretty awesome so that worked out well. and I am getting married to a beautiful woman, so that one will be checked off the list. However, I have not been in any high speed car chases, fought nazis, or travled in space yet. Nor have I caught any hard core criminals lethal weapon style. (which typically involves jumping onto moving cars and sniping people with a pistol.)

Sort of… I got to be a soldier, defending people that needed it, got a great girl and a nice place to live :) Only need to be a millionaire and stop poverty left… oh and I still need that nobel prize…

When I was a kid looking ahead to the age I am now, I assumed I’d be a high school English teacher and an archaeologist, married with two lovely daughters and living in a nice house with a big garden.

And well, I’m married at least.

I drive fire trucks and shoot machine guns (not at the same time)...I have 2 jobs and they both have action figures, and kids dress up as me for Halloween. I’ve done pretty good with those boyhood dreams, I reckon.

Everyday I’m trying to make it happen!
I’m going to college, the one I always wanted to attend (even though back in the day seemed impossible)
I drive a very nice car even though I’m just twentysomething
I’m still single (‘round here, that’s an achievement)
I have good caring friends
I have the chance to enjoy the things I always wanted to enjoy, I’m a big dreamer and nothing compares to stare at the things you’ve accomplished and realizing that you started from zero and now you are where you are…
Life for me is a big dream come true :)
I saw my soccer team playing a world cup final last weekend against the best team in the world and we lost (bu were very close to a victory)
I’ve met Presidents and former Presidents, Congressmen, Senators, artists, performers, whoa, really my life is the gift I always dreamed :)

Although, I don’t have the fun Jholler has!

Well, I am 14 and not fully grown up, but when I grow up, I want to make it to every state in America. So far I have been to just less than ½.

omfgTALIjustIMDu's avatar

Well I’m still not the moon, or a bird, or a horse, or an astronaut. Nor have I met God or the President or invented a time machine, so I guess I’ve failed myself at fulfilling my childhood dreams and goals.

I’m still working on becoming a bird, maybe someday…

I wanted to make paintings so beautiful that they would save the world.

I’ve made paintings as beautiful as I can manage. Sometimes people almost accidentally mention that they’ve always loved my work and always look forward to seeing more of it and it’s always made them feel Something Profound. But they tend not to feel like paying for it. They’d love to have it for nothing, but I won’t do that for strangers.

So I’m not famous. I haven’t saved the world.

You’ll have to do it.

laureth's avatar

@susanc: That’s the trouble with art of all kinds. People seldom want to pay for it. If they did, I’d be making some.

Judi's avatar

@Susanic and Laureth; I have paid for art! I got a beautiful watercolor for Christmas!

wundayatta's avatar

Nope. And I won’t, since my dreams are far beyond the possible. It’s a problem. I’m working on it.

vanelokz's avatar

seems to be that life is a lot harder than we expected (well to some of us)

Judi's avatar

@daloon;
Sounds like a reaching for the stars to reach toe moon situation for me. Keep trying. You can choose a problem or an inspiration. The latter is more productive!

omfgTALIjustIMDu's avatar

Hehe, “toe moon.”

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a movie star. I wanted to name my first daughter Linda. I wanted to marry Richie Riley. I wanted to have 10 kids. I didn’t achieve any of those goals, because when I grew up, my goals changed dramatically.

@omfgTALIjustIMDu ;
my spell check didn’t catch that!
