How do you start your day (even if you work the night shift)?

Asked by BronxLens (1539points) January 16th, 2009

Question inspired by this blog (which in turn arrived via the Very Short List )
Myself, the alarm goes off at 6am, I take 30 min. to get out of bed, so in the mean time I listen to news radio. Then a shower, dress up, and head on to work, where then I have a cup of coffee and a granola bar. Then, hit the emails and take it from there.

Alarm at 6, roll over, whack the goddamn clock, go back to sleep, alarm again at 6:05, roll over, whack the goddamn clock, get up. Put on socks and bathrobe, feed both animals,
start the coffee going. Look at email, go get the coffee, come back to computer, deal with the email, check fluther. Only after all this is complete can I become a workable human.

Oh I forgot: twist the little thingies on all the venetian blinds so light can come into the kitchen.

I hit my snooze button for about an hour, roll out of bed, stumble out of my room usually bouncing off a wall some where, and fall into my computer chair, then I go through the regular check list of web sites like cnn.com nytimes.com slate.com facebook.com and fluther.com sometimes I check my email but its usually not very interesting. Then I usually crank up the heat because im to lazy to put on a bunch of clothes. Then I decide if I want to take a shower first or eat. Usually I eat. Or I shower and wait till lunch to eat. But thats usually what I do to get going.

Well I’m a college student… so there isn’t really a set time I get up everyday – it varies by classes. Regardless, I usuallly turn my alarm off and go back to sleep for 10 minutes until my second alarm goes off. From there I get out of bed, take a shower, get a bowl of cereal and check email/websites/fluther while I eat – while also having the t.v. on (usually music, but lately it has been the SPEED channel). From there I slowly get dressed, put make-up on, figure out what’s going on with my hair for the day, and get books, lunch, etc. together. Then – I’m off for a fun-filled day of learning :/

Feed the fish. After that it’s anybody’s guess.

Thank you for reminding me of one of the best Kids In The Hall sketches ever!

For the record, at the moment I hit the alarm, get up, dress and walk the dog. Then I feed her and take a shower and then I have a cup of coffee and read the paper.

My wife’s alarm goes off at 7 or so. She usually hits snooze once or twice before she gets out of bed around 7:10 or 7:15. The alarm is the radio—news. Sometimes, when I’m really sleepy, I kind of drowse through this. My alarm goes off at 7:20, and I slowly wake, listening to news and, most importantly, the weather. If I don’t get weather, they don’t do it at 7:30, which is really annoying. Half the time, I am too sleepy to hear the weather. I usually get out of bed at 7:25 and head off to the shower, but sometimes I don’t get out of bed, and my wife, around 7:35, becomes alarmed, and comes to wake me.

Shower, dress, take my pills with water or OJ, and then get my son off to the bus, and then I hie myself to work. If I ride my bike, I’m alone. If I drive, I take my wife to work, too. At work, I get my latte.

No alarm, I just get up around 6:00 and then the ritual starts

I get up around 8:45 am and usually do not hit snooze. I reach for my phoneunder my pillow and check my email/SMS messages. I get up, get dressed, and go eat breakfast (eggs). I come back and read/go on my computer/clean up/watch TV until my 10 AM or 11 AM class. (depends on day)

Weekends I sleep in, but I don’t like to sleep past 8:45 at all on the weekdays.

I’m so jealous of all of you who seem to have time to sit around and wake up/check the computer/etc.

Alarm goes off at 6:50. I snooze twice and get up around 7:15. I take a shower and get dressed. If I didn’t take too long to pick out my outfit, I eat breakfast while my boyfriend’s showering (lately it’s been raisin bran). Then I dry my hair, get my lunch together if I’m bringing one, and leave for work at 8:15. At work, I make a cup of tea and sit down to my email and my work.

My husband wakes me up at 5:30am for a little “fun” time before he heads off to work. I see him off to work around 6:15, grab a cup of coffee and check the weather. Then I wake my sons up for school, watch Morning Joe and check fluther. Once the boys are off to school I eat some cereal, fluther some more then get busy with the housework.

When I wake up relies entirely on when I have class that day. Last semester, I didn’t have class until 4 on Thursday, so I wouldn’t wake up until well afternoon. I do, however, have two 9am classes, so I have to get up for them. I always get up at 7:45 to take my birth control pill, but I usually go right back to sleep. When I finally do wake up for good, I lay in bed for awhile, either freezing or roasting because my apt sucks at that temperature thing, then I start moving – very slowly. It sucks when my roommate forgets that I don’t have class and wakes me up.

@BlueDing – I found that I’m just too grouchy all day if I don’t have my own time in the morning, before I give 8 hours to someone else. It really helps!

I’m a horrible alarm clock person. I set it for 6:15, but usually hit snooze or reset it to 7:15. Start the coffee maker. Shower. Get coffee & drink it while I get ready to music. Hurry to pick out my clothes and run out the door so I can leave my house by 8:15 for work.

I wish I could drag myself out of bed earlier to read & such, but that’s just not an option for me. :/

It goes someting like this:

- Wake up at about 1:30 pm (via alarm)
– Do some exercises
– Take diabetes meds to get the pancreas stimulated to produce more insulin before eating lunch
– Eat lunch
– Jump on the computer to scope out Fluther for a few minutes
– Shower, shave, put on my uniform (I’m in the military)
– Open the garage door, back the car out, leave the safety of my neighborhood behind
– Pick up dinner and a cup of coffee on the way to work
– Arrive at work and stay there from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

At present I generally don’t have to wake up at any particular time (which is lovely). I usually set the alarm for 11am or noon as a fail-safe, because I have been known to sleep past 2 in the afternoon. I cannot for the life of me get up the first time it rings, so I snooze several times. I occassionally sleep through the (really LOUD) alarm altogether. I stumble to the bathroom and pee (can’t believe no one else has mentioned the morning pee!), go back to the bedroom, get dressed (sort of) & smoke. Make my way downstairs, grab a diet Sprite, smoke some more, check email, read news, Fluther for a good hour or two while I actually wake up. Take the first 6 pills of the day. If I have to go somewhere I’ll shower, then really get dressed (fit for the public eye) and away I go. If not, I may or may not shower and get dressed, but I always put on real shoes even if I’m just washing the dishes. I can’t work without ‘em.

Alarm goes off @ 5:30. If I can refrain from slapping the snooze alarm I am in the car by 6:30 (having peed twice) sans makeup and breakfast. At work by 6:45 and at my desk by seven, depending if the parking gods have been kind. Then an hour of checking email, clearing paperwork and making copies as necessary. 7:50 sleepy teenagers greet me as they drag themselves into the room 8:00 the bell rings—my day has begun.

@dlm812 : lurve lurve lurve for “figure out what’s going on with my hair for the day”. I have to do that every day too, though for me it comes after the required routine for becoming human.
