St. Paul – First Corinthians, 13:11 Elmer Gantry “the time has come to put away foolish things”.
Meet me in – Lexington at Lou Reed’s.
The William S. Burroughs Poster method of literature. Bill at the Facility. Just down the road.
Lou would walk behind Bill. Bill’s wife’s life flashed like Ian Curtis’s. Ian’s story was over, but Bill’s was just beginning. ‘it was the death of Joan, more than anything else, that spurred my writing career.’
Threat level elevated: condition yellow
The mantra.
Read about Bill. The seminal novel of the early New York underground. Before there was Kerouac there was Bill. Any good Kerouac. Any good Bill. Providential that they should write a novel together, the premise rather substantial, the title, inconsequential.
What if the yagi Bill was after was the magic potion? Ralph Steadman had some lithographs done by a friend here in Lexington (area) Versailles? Went over to Bill’s in Kansas and had some target practice.

How’s your car? Totaled. Totaled? Totaled. What are you driving now? He is turning toward the window to see. Uh, a um, Volvo. “No, you’re in the other car” my wife blurts out stopping his turn but gauging a Volvo is a good car. “That’s right, I took the car in the garage

I honestly have to read Burroughs, but I was going to remark that Kerouac could be said to “typify Beat literature.” I’ve read a lot of his books and poetry and now when I think about the fifties I’m hard pressed to not get caught by his words.

Possibly because of the Beat’s eclectic and go anywhere do anything be human sort of nature it would be fair to simply say that a lot of the then contemporary(sic) literature coming out at the time could be said to have contributed a great deal to the subculture. Though what books like “Naked Lunch” and “On The Road” did was to bring the ideals of Beat to a mainstream demographic who because of geography or class may not have had any exposure to it at the time. In that sense it could probably be said that Kerouac’s writing was more representative of the group even if Burroughs’ may have been a more raw expression of Beat.
