How do I become un-phlegmy?

Asked by ezraglenn (3502points) October 7th, 2007

I am having some serious issues with phlegm lately. I don’t drink much dairy or juice, I don’t really know what’s causing it, and I want it to go away. I take zyrtec for seasonal allergies.

I’m not a doctor. But I used to watch ER.

Many anti-histamines (including Zyrtec) can cause dryness of the sinuses. I’ve noticed when I’m a little dehydrated that I tend to have have phlegm.

Drink more water (as you should anyways) as you should have 8 glasses of water a day. Substitute drying substances such as caffeinated beverages, sodas for water. Beyond the hopefully anti-phlegm effect it’s saves money and makes you feel better.

It’s officially called Post Nasal Drip.

PND

OTC saline nasal sprays such as OCEAN and AYRE help, as does Nasalchrom – Sodium chromolyn -spray (which used to be available only as RX and now is OTC. These must all be used regularly.)

@artificial’s advice about drinking lots of water wll help but not cure.
