Have any of you ever heard of a spine disease?

Asked by LouisianaGirl (1159points) February 20th, 2009

Today some ladies came to our school and checked our spines to check and see if any of us had the spine disease. Has anyone checked your kid?

@A_Beaverhausen yea they said if it made kind of an “S” shape that they would get an appointment at a hospital. Thank GOD none of us had it cuz im scared of needles. And I am so sorry are you okay?

That is good that they check us but they made us take our shirts off and bend at the waist and asked if we had started our period. The girls didn`t mind it but the boys acted like they tried to murder them but the woman didn`t even touch us.

Yes, it is indeed scoliosis. My daughter has a faint touch of it but it isn’t progressing and it isn’t causing her any problems. It is possible that it might when she gets old and decrepit like me but it isn’t bad enough for anyone to try to fix it.

In the bad old days before air conditioning, my best friend in fourth grade was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. Back then the only fix was surgery. She spent an entire hot California summer in a body cast and then had to wear a nasty metal back brace until she got to her adult height.

Nowadays, there are more options for fixing it, especially if doctors get to it early.

Tell the boys to just wait until they are in football and have to be checked for hernias. Then they will yell for sure!

@Darwin they do play football for our school but they were just showing out and hows ur friend and daughter doing?

Yes, boys will do what they can to get attention from girls.

We are doing fine. Heading out to my daughter’s soccer game shortly.

I wish that my scoliosis had been diagnosed before it was noticed my freshman year in college. The treatment for mild scoliosis has nothing to do with needles.

One gets custom-tailored exercises from a Physical Therapist or Trainer to stretch lower back and quads, and to strengthen abdominal muscles and arms and shoulders.

I still lie on a heating pad for 10 minutes and do my stretches etc. daily.

Some of my students in the early eighties either wore a light-weight body cast or had a rod fused to spine in order to keep the curvature from worsening. But they had bad cases. Spines like this – S – instead of this – I -.

I’ve heard of spinal bifida, but I can’t tell you what the heck it is.

Here’s some info on spina bifida.

I have a slight case of scoliosis, but never knew it until I had an MRI done for the back pain I have suffered for many years. I have 6 herniated and/ or bulging discs also. I am wearing a TENS unit as I post this.

wow i am getting really educated on this stuff it is really cool. And yes that is the only female attention they get so they were acting like it was sooooo terrible just to show out.

Strauss's avatar

It’s never bothered me, but I was once turned down for a very physical job because I have a slight spina bifida.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

@Yetanotheruser that is so wrong why? was it because of your accesibility?

Strauss's avatar

@LouisianaGirl This happened many years ago, in the early ‘70’s. The job was a riverboat worker on a riverboat going through the inland waterway between Chicago and the New Orleans. It is a very physically demanding job, but the pay was very good. They found the spina bifida when I went for the pre-employment physical. I was surprised, because as a Navy vet, it had never shown up on any physical, and never caused me any problems, before or since. They told me it was because they had a high rate of disability due to back problems, so the slightest defect could disqualify.
