What should I do with my cat-piss couch?

Asked by nocountry2 (3689points) March 5th, 2009

We have a very nice, $1000 Dania microfiber sectional that has been totally ruined by cat piss. It’s soaked into the cushions and sitting on this couch is really an unpleasant olfactory experience. Any useful ideas on what I can do with it?

I am so sorry. Throw it out is really the only answer. It will have soaked into the cushions through the upholstery.

You could try a black light and Nature’s Miracle, but I just don’t think it will get it all.

Is it just on the cushions, or on the couch itself? I’ve read that you can actually wash the cushions, but if there’s foam inside, you have to take it out. Washing it in a vinegar solution can do the trick. But, if you’ve tried washing the couch with a mild soap and warm water, and cannot get the smell up, I think you unfortunately have to throw it out :(

Yeah, you’re probably chucking it, sorry dear.

No way – they’ve pissed on it like 20x, sometimes we didn’t catch it until the next day – I’ve scrubbed and soaked and machine-cleaned….it’s a goner. I was hoping there was something I could do to recycle or donate or make an art project out of it….and the cushions are sewn into the couch, fucking Dania.

@nocountry2 Bonfire? Invite the neighbors for marshmallow roast.

Haha, sorry the bitterness at the end was giggle worthy. Better luck next time. Get that bitter apple stuff for your next couch. :)

Oh! You could always call Purple Heart, they come and pick things up free of charge.

marinelife's avatar

@casheroo But do they want a cat piss smell couch?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Marina I don’t think I’d even want to eat marshmallows over that smoke! But yeah, burning it is the only solution. You never get cat pee out of anything.

SeventhSense's avatar

@casheroo Yes but even the needy don’ts wants da pee stank.

Burn it far, far away from civilization.

No charity groups are going to want that thing. Cat piss is near impossible to completely remove. No point in trying to salvage parts.

It’s toast! But I wouldn’t roast marshmallows on its flames!

I might be able to take it. We have a covered back porch and I could toss a cover on it. I will ask my sister when she gets back from Eugene.

bananafish's avatar

A cover won’t contain the piss stench. It’ll just ruin the cover.

jrpowell's avatar

But it will be outside.

bananafish's avatar

Well at least that should keep the coyotes away!

…of course you’ll attract more cats to mark the area…

nocountry2's avatar

Brilliant! It’s totally yours JP – it even comes with a big round foot thingy that is piss-free

zenfarian's avatar

Maybe you could make a nice bonfire and dance around it.

We have access to a truck. I just need to run it past my sister. And you are right down the street so it wouldn’t be a problem to pick-up.

nocountry2's avatar

Oh sweet – even better since I’m trying to sell our truck this weekend!

And Fluther solves another problem. :)

now what’s going to happen when you get a new couch? have you considered what you’ll do? or no couch?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Sounds like it should be no cat!

angelic_fire_hazzard55555's avatar

i think you need to toss the couch but when you get a new one here is what you do to stop your cat from urinating on it. the reason cats pee on things is to spread there sent and claim dominence so if you take a damp cloth and stroke your cat with it then wipe your couch with it. that cat shouldnt use your sofa as a liter box anymore however this needs to be repeated every once in a while
