Where is the best place to start creating content for the web?

Asked by eager_to_know (15points) April 7th, 2009

I’m a print designer. But I know I need to be able to offer web to my clients. I have Dreamweaver and Espresso. I’m incredibly intimidated. Are there any good books that you can recommend? Or sites that get you going quickly. I’m reading for a steep learning curve.

Get yourself a blog?

If you got the macromedia suite it comes with a bunch of tutorial dvds that aren’t all bad. but I agree with dverhey, for most everything you could want to do, blogger or tumblr or something will work just fine.

Start with HTML and CSS. I wouldn’t start with something like Dreamweaver. Use a text editor at first. Even with Dreamweaver you will still have to write code. So you might as well start off with learning how to code. I use Textmate. Since you said Espresso I assume you are using a Mac.

Really, just pick up any learn HTML and CSS in 24 hours book. It is actually pretty simple.

I totally agree with @johnpowell – if you start by learning how the code works, you’ll have a much better understanding of how everything fits together than if you just work with Dreamweaver.

I’m a big fan of the Sam’s books – I used the html/css book to learn the basics a few years ago, and I just finished reading the ajax/javascript/php book, now that I’m getting into creating more complicated sites. I’d definitely recommend starting with html and css – that’ll cover all the basics that you need to get started, and then you can see where your designs take you from there…

Good luck!

Start with content. Have something interesting to say.

Beautiful design on the web can have two purposes. It can make content more compelling, or it can disguise the fact that there is no content. You want your websites to be the former, not the latter.
