What makes your s'mores special?

Asked by VS (4040points) April 13th, 2009

I know s’mores are just basically a graham cracker, a blob of Hershey’s chocolate and a melted marshmallow. My husband has touted me as the Queen of S’Mores, so what I can I add to make them extra special? I’m taking my 7 year-old niece camping next weekend, and have been told the s’mores BETTER be good!!

Instead of Hershey’s, try using a peanut butter or caramel cup.

Gelatin-free marshmallows.

I burn my marshmallows so that they are black and crispy on the outside, and gooey goodness on the inside.

Gives the s’more a little bit of a “charcoal” taste and I really enjoy that!

Using chocolate covered graham crackers is lots easier for little hands and they fall apart less than with the traditional method and taste the same. Chocolate icing instead of a chocolate bar works well also.

Dark chocolate, and they’re made with lurve.

I don’t think they can possibly be better than the classic recipe. If this is what the kids are expecting, anything else will be a disappointment, no matter how much an adult might love it. In fact, I would be disappointed too. (And some kids hate peanut butter, dark chocolate, etc.)

(When I was a kid in New England, I thought those were called Samoas.)

@Jeruba Screw the kids, these are my s’mores! ;-)

Char that marshmallow and throw it onto a peanut butter cup. That is definitely where it’s at.

Yuck, no PB for me, thanks. I’d rather have mine on oatmeal or broccoli than peanut butter.

@Jeruba You had me at oatmeal, but broccoli? :-(

Better than peanut butter by a mile. Just to make the point that you can’t assume everybody likes what you like, and if you advertise s’mores, you risk making somebody unhappy if they aren’t regulation s’mores.

One year for my birthday somebody surprised me with a cake covered in coconut shreds after I’d said plain chocolate frosting would be best. I had to scrape the frosting off. No amount of politeness was strong enough to overcome the gag reflex.

@Jeruba You poor thing. I can’t imagine disliking coconut…or peanut butter. :-( But, like I said, these are my s’mores, so I don’t advertise.
