How do I get rid of millions of tiny ants?

Asked by lilakess (789points) December 17th, 2007

I’ve tried traps as well as caulking any hole I see them coming out of, but they don’t stop. There are millions! What can I do? My daugher is saying ant, ant…

I dont know if this applies to your situation, but:
My brother and I used to put a bunch of honey in a corner or some place in the house that we werent going to go near for a day or so, if possible, and then wait for a massive trail. most of the time all the ants would ditch whatever else in the kitchen they were after, and then we could target and destroy them. I bet if you wanted you could do that with a bunch of poison traps so they take it back to the nest and kill the rest…

I discovered that the active ingredient in the granules that you spread outside for ants is fipronil – the active ingredient in Frontline. I get a bottle of the spray form (not the back of the neck applicators) and spray along the seam between the floor and walls. I also spray around window sill and doors that I have a problem with (I have pet birds, so there is ALWAYS food for ants on the floor). It usually works for a couple of months before I have to reapply. Uses caution – the solution is alcohol based and may discolor some materials.

1) Keep an ultra-clean kitchen, including doing dishes as soon as they are sullied. This cuts down on the active population you find on counters considerably.
2) Seal all food containers well. Sugar, cereals, etc. Air-tight.
3) Next time you do find a bunch of ants, try to follow the trail back to the nest. Look outside your house, in the soil outside the kitchen, in the crevices at the base of the foundation. With careful sleuthing you might find the nest. Repeated kettles of boiling water in the nest over a period of days can eradicate the menace!

Not trying to advertise here…

But Ortho brand Fire Ant Killer works great! And not just on fire ants either.

Ants think it’s food, so they take it back to the queen and feed it to her. My personal results show total annihilation of the colony in less than 24 hours.

I use the same technique as Rob except the brand we use is Terro. The ants come, eat, take it back to the colony, and then you don’t hear from them again (because they’re dead). It’s not instantaneous, but it’s more effective then just killing the ants you can see.
