USPS First Class International, from NYC to London: how long?

Asked by cirrina (187points) July 18th, 2009

A several-ounce, flat, padded envelope. I’m referring to the least expensive USPS mail option, First Class International.

Do you have any experience that would help me guess about how long this would take to arrive? Especially: is it likely this would take more than two weeks to arrive?

I’ve sent mail overseas before and it’s never taken 2 weeks. Usually it’s just a few days.

Thanks—you mean it’s always taken less?

Yes, from the few times I’ve done this.

I sent a rather large package to Switzerland. It took about five days. It was a pretty big box and I went with the cheapest option.

I sell vintage online and it usually takes less than 2 weeks to the UK, but I’ve had a few packages take substantially longer. Have you checked with your local post office? When a package is delayed, frequently it means it’s in customs being processed for customs fees.

I’ve gotten good advice by going to the International Shipping board at ebay uk. Even if it wasn’t an ebay purchase, just reading some of the threads can be very informative.

Thanks, I’m planning now (haven’t mailed it yet). I want it to arrive by the 15th of August and I wanted to know if sending on the 1st of August is probably okay.

It really depends on whether it goes through customs or not. Do you need to affix a customs form to the package?

Customs forms are required for all packages. Customs fees start at a value of around $30 usd, and can be applied even for gifts. A random selection of packages are diverted into customs for assessment of fees.
