Did you ever hear of "Rubber Donuts"?

Asked by simone54 (7629points) July 27th, 2009

My dad used to make them on Christmas as it was a tradition. They are deep fried Italian bread dough with a single anchovy stuffed inside, DELISH,

Have you every heard of these? Maybe you did and called them something else. I WANT TO KNOW!

I’ve never heard of them nor had them, but I’d be interested to know how common this is.
Follows question.

Honestly, I thought you were talking about the donut thingys people sit on when they have hemorrhoids!

I have never heard of these, but they sound awesome! minus the anchovy – could it be a meatball inside or perhaps a piece of chocolate?

I like anchovies but alone with a piece of deep fried bread, I’m not too sure about that. Never had them or heard of them though. Any other name for them?

I’m wondering myself about the other names.

I thought you were talking about the mini-size spare tires that used to be so ubiquitous years ago. I thought they were kind of a stupid idea as you really couldn’t drive that far on them.

No, but I’ve heard of a Rubber Biscuit.

My mother used to make something similar every Christmas, but NEVER were they filled with only ONE anchovy. Some would be filled with MANY anchovies, others filled with codfish, and still others filled with broccoli rabe. And it was PIZZA DOUGH that was used.

Never, ever did I hear the term rubber donuts. It sounds like a joke someone in your family made up.

P.S. Yes, I’m Italian-American.

@Quagmire Yes, we actually used Pizza Dough as well. Do you remember what she called them?

I’d have to go with “Zeppole Something Something”. “Zeppole” alone were the sweet things with powdered sugar you get at the fairs. I found this which talks about the fillings like I said. BTW, “little round balls” nothing (except for the powdered sugar ones). My mother made them large:

YES!!!!! I’m from the Philly area and my family calls them rubber donuts. The EXACT same thing. I wonder if its a regional thing. And my grandmother’s maiden name was Simone.
