Can someone have their Fluther account name changed?

Asked by erniefernandez (556points) July 29th, 2009

I made erniefernandez my account name, by default, since ‘ernie’ is usually taken. But it isn’t… so, I kind of want it, but I already have this account set up.

Is there a way to please-please appeal to have it changed, or should I just live with it? :)

It’s fine if that’s the case. I was just curious.

Talk to Bendrew?
And ask them, @andrew @ben

I know it’s possible, I’ve seen users change their screennames before. You’d have to talk to a mod.

There’s no way short of petitioning the founders, and they don’t usually do it without a compelling reason. But hey, since you just started, why not just set up a new account?

You could get another 46 lurve pretty quickly.
May as well just create a new account.

Since you only have 46 lurve I would just abandon this one and start using the new one.

I’d ask either Ben or Andrew (or as we affectionately call them around these parts – Bendrew) if they can change it first. If they can’t, then I’d close your erniefernandez account and create a new one with the username you prefer. Like most people have said already, 46 lurve would be simple to earn back.

Just seems like a waste and a lot of complication for a name change. I’ll ask and see what happens. Thanks for the recommendations!

You’d have to make a sacrifice to the Fluther gods. What do jellyfish eat?... Plankton. You need a sacrificial plankton.

It shouldn’t be too hard, but it really depends on how their database is set up. Presumably it is done using the proper way, in which case the only time your username is there is in the user table, linked to whatever primary key you were assigned by the database. Then again, there is also the option of using the username itself as a primary key.

So yes, appeal to Ben and Andrew and see if they have the time to fix it for you. Otherwise, simply make a new account with your desired username, while your history won’t port over, you can easily regain your 48 lurve.

One complication is that if a user changes names, then any ”@” links to them in existing threads will no longer work.

With only 51 lurve I would make a new account. Totally easy at that stage and you will get lots of lurve fast.

46, 48, 51 luvre. You’re losing precious lurve, my friend!

What is the use of lurve? My thing isn’t the lurve, it’s just that this account is already set up, filled out, learning my question types, set up with my instant messengers, etc…

@erniefernandez There’s no real use, just fun to look at… I guess. (My joke flopped.)
Like I said, try asking the founders first. That way you won’t have to go through the sign up process again. If, however, they can’t switch it for you, then you have two options. 1) Live with how it is now or 2) go through the sign up process again.
That’s all we can really tell you.

One reason users can’t change their own user name is because of the reason @Harp mentioned. If that was possible, there would probably be a few people who wanted a new username every week. Then all of the responses directed at them would make no sense since it’s the persons user name that changes, not the responses written to them.

@erniefernandez It really isn’t a big deal. Fluther makes it very quick and easy to create a new account. According to your Fluther profile, your account about 2 days old. I think you should just create a
new account. It really isn’t much trouble to set things up again.
