What is a good dance style to learn for a beginner adult?

Asked by jessegavin (85points) August 6th, 2009

I haven’t ever taken dance lessons in my life. However, I started watching So You Think You Can Dance a few years back and have become addicted to watching dance. Now I want to take some classes so that I can go dancing with my wife.

I would like to learn how to do dances like the Fox Trot and the Waltz. Is that too hard to learn?

Also, where do people go to dance like this? I wouldn’t want to dance formal dances at weddings because I don’t want to be one of those dorky people who get all serious and try to use their dance lessons to look cool and end up crowding out everyone else that is slow dancing.

Also, I am not fond of swing dancing.

Any tips?

@Zendo I’ll get right on that.

Oh man, I was all set to tell you how much fun swing dancing is! You can take “ballroom” which will cover several dances. They’ll teach you the basic techniques first which can be applied to many dances. Then, you’ll learn the steps to the individual dances.

@ubersiren I think the reason I am not fond of swing dancing is that I am afraid that if I like swing dance that I will end up like those other people I know who watch Sing Kids all the time and dress like they are in the 40’s.

@jessegavin : Hahaha… but that’s hot! I love that movie, but I limit myself to maybe once a year. :)

You can take ballroom dancing lesson at a studio. The whole thing, though, is set up to suck you in to the lifestyle. They hold “parties” where you can practice, etc.

Try to learn with a partner. The old-fashioned versions of fox trot, waltz, two-step, samba, rhumba, mambo are completely different from the choreographed, hyper-fast, and athletic routines you see on the SYTYCD-style programs. Normal paired dancing is easy and you don’t have to audition for a Broadway musical in order to have fun and keep the beat.

We learned all the steps in seventh and eighth-grade dancing classes.

I would think the Viennese Waltz and the Cha-Cha-Cha (::giggle!::) would be the easiest to learn.

My eighth grade teacher once did the Lindy Hop with me. I was the tiniest girl in the class, so I suppose I was quite easy to toss around. It was fun!

There is certainly no commonly agreed answer which dance is easier to learn and which one is more difficult. At the end it depends on you and your partner what dances you like and work best for you. My wife and I like Slow Waltz but do not like Viennese Waltz so much, with the latter we usually have a hard time to get that really right. For many people Viennese Waltz is what they like, especially since it can be “used” on almost any feast.
I love Rumba but remember it took me a while and lots of practicing to really grasp the rhythm.
So, final recommendation: try any of these dances. You will figure out by yourself which ones you like and those you like are then easier to learn.
