Can BC pills make your period go away, mid-period?

Asked by FrankHebusSmith (4319points) September 7th, 2009

Asking this for my g/f. She just got her period, and for reasons I won’t go into REALLY doesn’t want it to be right now (this week-ish). She has BC pills on their way, and they should arrive within a day or two. The question simply put is, can the BC pills make her period stop? There is NO concern for using them as actual BC in this situation. She is just curious if they will make the period go away. Experiences/experienced comments preferred, but any welcome.

EDIT: If you know something that will make it end faster/quickly, feel free to add that in.

Takes up to three days for me, in my personal experience of taking the pill off and on for 9 years.
This is why she needs to plan these things, if pregnancy is no a concern because she is using other protection, then she can mess with the pill so she gets her period when she wants…I used to do that all the time. Be sure to use back up birth control though

When you take the pill you take 21 days of medication and then stop for 7 or take 7 days of sugar pills. During the 7 days (usually the second day, but it varies) without the drug she will get her period. Sometimes women take the pills for three months straight so they only get 4 periods a year, but don’t do it without talking to a doctor. Many women get lighter shorter periods on the pill, I never did.

It’s fine for her to start her first pack of pills as soon as they arrive, and it might shorten this period by a little bit like a day. But the period will not stop the instant she starts taking the pills.

Sometimes, we use OCPs to get very heavy bleeding stopped urgently – we have women take 2–3 pills at a time twice a day for a couple of days, and then taper the dose down over the next week or so. We also have to give them anti-nausea meds so they can tolerate all that estrogen without vomiting. Overkill for your GF’s situation.

Oh, I think I misunderstood originally. No her period won’t stop if she starts the pills now while she is bleeding.

Get her some tampons, some chocolate and some chick flicks. She’s stuck with it, no matter how much she doesn’t want it right now.

WHAT IF I JUST STARTED MY BC PILLS AND MY PERIOD STOPED AFTER ONE DAY SHOULD I BE CONCERN

It may not go away THAT quickly but my periods are die hards so if the bc isn’t working quick enough I will try to take a few IB profeins. There is a little extra bloating from it but not much and it goes away for a few hours.

@TRATAVIA , I need a bit more information. Was this your first pack of birth control pills? If it was, or if you had missed any pills from your previous pack, I would recommend doing a home pregnancy test in a week or two. if it’s negative, or if you’ve been taking pills consisteently, I wouldn’t worry.
