Did you know that Betty Boop was originally a dog?

Asked by brinibear (1388points) September 10th, 2009

So I was wondering what was her name before her transformation, and why did they change her?

Probably because no one really wants to see a sexy dog….

What?!! Where did this little tid bit of information come from?

Well, when I was younger, I saw a history on Betty Boop, but I wasn’t totally interested. The only thing I remember hearing was that she was a dog, and her earings were orginally her ears. But keep in mind also that cartoons were originally made for adults, and not children.

@cheebdragon wow that is a lot of information. I didn’t think that there was so much going on as to why they changed her. thank you

I knew this. But I was a film major, and my college’s focus is on film history, theory and criticism. We saw a lot of Pre-Hays Code films in my classes that made us go, Wow, people were slutting around and doing coke and all that? And put it on screen? In cartoons? Damn! Who knew?

Honest to god this has been an extra credit question on my exams for some time now. Mainly because I’m a total animation history fanatic!

@TheRocketPig that is interesting. I also know that Goofy was originally name Dippy Dawg. But I don’t know the whole story behind that one, cause I haven’t looked it up. I know a little bit about animation history, cause I love cartoons.

Here is a vid of her as a dog. She refers to herself as Nan McGrew which is the same name as the Helen Kane movie The Dangerous Nan McGrew.
