Best way to remove hair dye from a couch cushion?

Asked by cwicseolfor (83points) September 19th, 2009

My wife dyed her hair red, and even after some washes, I’ve noticed it’s leaving a slight color deposit on the couch fabric. What is the best way to remove the color without removing the original fabric color?

What color and kind of fabric on sofa? Would it take to a complete red dye job?

@gailcalled There’s a picture of my couch here: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EqHtiOojeAlb3lDwqvZfDw?feat=directlink

I don’t have a photo of the dye, but it’s a red color.

@cwicseolfor: That is one cute cat. How about another throw cushion or a print shawl to throw over the stain? Or just train the cat to sleep on it. (What’s his name?)

@gailcalled The cat’s name is Melissa (the name of the album is “Melissa’s Album”) and she can’t quite sit on the stain. Since the cause of the red coloration is hair dye, you have to imagine where the back of your head would be when you sit on a couch. That’s where the red coloration is occurring.

Then try the scarf option. A nice cashmere or pashmina one would do.

So the bottom line is that removing the stain is impossible, and covering it up is the only option?

I would think that trying to remove red hair dye would make a bigger mess, but you might ask your local dry cleaner. I really have no idea but I guess that permanent hair dye is potent and designed to last. (Your other kitty is also adorable.)

My step-sister is a stylist and she said the best way to get hair color out of your hair (if you want it to fade b/c you think it is too dark or whatever) is to use regular Tide or Dawn. I’m not sure if she means liquid or powder tide, but you could give either or both a try. Also, maybe an Oxy Clean paste? Oh, and this may not work at all, but the Shout Advanced stain spray kicks ass on set in stains.

If you’re going to just cover it anyway, I don’t see any harm in giving other stuff a try.

Pay a professional cleaner to come in and do it, and while you’re at it, get the rugs done too.

@Supacase: He wants to get the dye out of a couch, not hair. Does she have any tips for that? Maybe the same ones? ;-)
