How long will an apple stay good in my fridge?

Asked by JLeslie (65450points) September 22nd, 2009

I am so excited that honeycrisp apples hit my supermarket! Yum! We wait for this time of year, because it is such a tasty apple. They are in the market for such a short time. I was wondering how long I can keep them in my fridge, thinking that at the end of the season I might buy a bunch to store, so we can eat them through the spring. I tried to look it up on-line, but couldn’t come up with anything.

I’m not certain how cold it is by you @JLeslie, but here in Wis this is how we store our apples over winter.

In the fridge, they should last pretty long if you wrap them each in a newspaper.

How cold is your basement?

JLeslie's avatar

No basement, I’m in Memphis, but I can adjust the temp on my wine fridge, we don’t drink. I store medicine in there and all sorts of stuff that needs a specific temp. Thanks.

It didn’t say the best temperature actually. I’m thinking a cellar would be around 50 or 60 degrees Farenheit, what do you think?

Google presents a very comprehensive list of answer to your question. Be sure to heed the advice not to store any apple with even the smallest bruise.

My apples still in original bag from supper market , 4 weeks and they are still cripsy and juicy . I normally do not store apples in a fridge , i think it spoils the taste but we bought loads for the kids

It depends on what kind of influence it’s exposed too. Are there any delinquent fruit hanging out in your fridge?

I don’t like to refrigerate apples. I have a root storage room that stays around 55–60 degrees or so. If I don’t bruise the apples they are generally fine for months.

I think I will put them in the wine fridge, especially after seeing what @pdworkin wrote. Thanks y’all.

@JLeslie have you ever had a pink lady? Those apples are amazing!

JLeslie's avatar

@SuperMouse I did try a pink lady, a girlfriend of mine loves that apple. I prefer Honeycrisp, but I will try another pink lady again.

I thought this was a computer question at first…

I am very sad to have never come across a Honeycrisp or a Pink Lady apple. I want in on this yummy goodness!

sandystrachan's avatar

Damn Honeycrisp i have never heard of them , do they go by another name ? Pink Ladies are amazing . Sometime we stick to plain or Granny Smiths or Golden Delicious , i love cooking apples :)

JLeslie's avatar

No, they don’t go by another name. Honeycrisp are consistantly crisp, hence the name, and they are not very sweet, but kind of sweet tart all at once. I mean it is THE BEST apple. The skin is red and green and yellow, and typically kind of shiny. They were invented in Minnesota, they are farely new so there is not a lot of production from what I understand. Here is the wikipedia I just looked up (haven’t read it) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeycrisp They just started hitting the market.

In Germany we keep apples in the basement. Some of them last till March the following year.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@JLeslie I would think 50–60 degrees would be perfect. That’s the average temp of my basement through winter.

my favs are honeycrisp & pink lady’s…and both store WELL

This makes me think I should probably be storing many things in that mini wine fridge I have. I just checked and I can remove the shelves for wine and replace it with flat shelves. You guys are great.

dpworkin's avatar

B-but what about the wine?

JLeslie's avatar

We don’t have any wine. Well, we have two bottles because people seem to think it is a good gift when they come to visit.

dpworkin's avatar

Ahh, well, that explains the wine cooler.

JLeslie's avatar

The wine cooler came with the house. It’s a little fridge in the butlers pantry. I’d rather have the butler.

dpworkin's avatar

i didn’t mean to make you explain yourself, i was just pulling your leg

@pdworkin I was thinking the same thing. Lurve!

JLeslie's avatar

I’m too literal sometimes. :)

YARNLADY's avatar

Thanks for the chuckle of the day folks, I lurve this place

As others have noted, you just need a cool dry place, not a fridge, but it also depends on the type of apple. I’m not sure how long Honeycrisps keep. They are good apples, but I like a more full flavored apple like Northern Spy or Macintosh when they are crisp.
