Can any glasses shop fix my hinges, or am I stuck going back to the place where I bought them?

Asked by andrew (16543points) September 27th, 2009

I have two sets of glasses made from recycled antique parts, which I thought was a good idea at the time. Unfortunately, the hinges (which aren’t antique) on them break. All the time. I’ve had both frames repaired at least 3 times each.

I just realized that the breaking may be accelerated due to the fact that my motorcycle helmet is putting pressure on the frames, so now I feel guilty about going back and having my current frames fixed (my other pair is still there after just being repaired)—on the other hand, each pair broke at least once before I got my motorcycle.

I tried having them fixed when they broke when I was living overseas, but the people at the big chain couldn’t help me.

Do I have to go back to the same people? What happens when I move to SF and they break again?

I’ve gotten my glasses repaired at lenscrafters even when I hadn’t bought them there (for free), but I don’t know if they can fix all glasses.

Ug. I just looked at the website—the place I went to is the dealership for it. So I’m thinking they’re the only people that have the parts. Annoying.

Over here and in Israel I’ve always just walked into whichever glasses shop happened to be nearby and they fixed my glasses for free every time. But I have modern glasses, not antique parts.

@all Yeah, that’s always been my experience as well. But when I did that in canada, they were baffled.
