Has there ever been an album devoted to one song by different singers?

Asked by LostInParadise (31914points) October 3rd, 2009

I know it sounds gimmicky but I think it might be interesting to hear the variety of interpretations and sounds that can come from one song. I was just on YouTube and did a search for Danny Boy. There is a large range of different types of people singing it, including Charlotte Church, Andy Williams, Judith Durham and Harry Belafonte. I also wonder if anyone has ever determined which song has been recorded by the most people.

I was certain this was done for Mansell’s Lux Aeterna (from the score of Requiem for a Dream), but can’t find evidence for it anywhere.

I’m almost positive there was an entire album of Lux Aeterna covers, remixes and whathaveyous. Dammit, someone help me out here.

I’ve been considering collecting different versions of my favorite song, Little Wing, because it has been covered and rearranged numerous times.

The most covered songs by recording are Eleanor Rigby and Yesterday, both by Paul McCartney (but attributed to McCartney and John Lennon). If one was to make an album of those songs, each one would have to be a box set!

I had a HS buddy do this for me a few years ago. He is in the Golden Oldie music business (making huge amounts of money, apparently).

For a recent big reunion, he made a surprise CD of 25 versions of Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are,” including Billy Ekstein, Norman Luboff choir, Tommy Dorsey, Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Kenton, Barbra Streisand, Jo Stafford, Maria Lanza, Charlie Parker, Helen Forrest/Artie Shaw et al. Song has been recorded by almost everyone since its chords are adaptable for big bands, vocalists and jazz musicians.

We joked that all that was missing was a castrato and a solo crumhorn.

The UK homeless charity Shelter once brought out an album of various artists doing a cover of The Rolling Stones track Gimme Shelter

I think the most recorded song is Yesterday

I have an album named Stairways to Heaven that I love. It’s not just covers of Stairway. It is Stairway’s lyrics being sung to different songs.

For example, one of the tracks is the song Rock Lobster being done with Stairway’s lyrics (my fave by the way). It’s by The Rock Lobsters.

I’m certain I’ve heard of an album like this, but I can’t remember for the life of me what it is. I know it wasn’t the one @Blondesjon mentioned.

I remember an album from around 1969 of covers of Hey Jude.
The covers were all in different styles. One was kind of like the Rightious Brothers, another was Beach Boys like. It was screamingly funny.
@hearkat lurve for Little Wing. A great song, done a great many ways.

@filmfann , Was the album deliberately humorous or did it just turn out that way, and were the different styles by different groups or just one group?

As I recall, it was meant to be funny, and probably different groups.
