Have you had the urge to talk to random strangers ?

Asked by airowDee (1791points) October 9th, 2009

talk to someone randomly on the street? Or say something provcative or personal to some strangers who just happen to walk by, or sit beside you on a bus or what not? I dream of doing socially unacceptable things and am curious what would happen.

I chat to all sorts of people whenever I am in the mood. I don’t see a problem with it.

I know a lot of 16 yr olds who think that’s funny. but it usually subsides.

I do it, should I be ashamed?

I’ve no issue with striking up a conversation with anyone that looks interesting or is dealing with a situation with me (“man, bus is late again. hope you aren’t late today, haha”).

if im in line, waiting, or sharing an experience – that’s one thing.

but as the OP stated, “a random person walking down the street” – that’s a different story.

yes, why not? i like people. there are so many interesting people from interesting places with good things to talk about. granted there are assholes and pedophiles too, but you gotta take a chance every once in a while.

I barely speak to people I know – why would I talk to strangers?

Well, not if I’m by myself. I’m kind of a big baby in public if I’m by myself, which luckily, isn’t too often, but when you live in a city, that’s bound to happen sometimes and there are ton of strangers around and I pretty much keep silent. When I’m with other people, yeah, sometimes I’d talk to a random person, but nothing negative or provocative.

I have a challenge for anyone reading this post. Pick one person that you don’t know, every day for one year and strike up an meaningful conversation. Every evening spend 15 minutes writing down what the conversation was about. I bet you’d have an interesting little book. Title? The title of my book will be, “365 Strangers.” What would your title be?

saying provacative and personal things to strangers seems to me like something a 16 year old who thinks they are “OMG, so random!” would do. Also seems like a good way to get molested.

Well, I talk to random strangers all the time on this site, so yes.

I was just on the bus and the lady sitting next to me noticed that I was reading a question here about Obama winning The Amazing Race. She started talking to me about it. We talked for about 10 minutes.

Talking to strangers is pretty common here.

An elevator would seem like a nice time to start chit-chat with a random person especially if that person is uncomfortable with awkward silence. However in my experience I cant start a conversation with a female without her thinking i’m hitting on her or going to rape her, so I keep my mouth shut and enjoy the silence.
