What does this [Spongebob] quote mean?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) October 31st, 2009 from iPhone

It’s from a Spongebob episode where Patrick and Spongebob are climbing a rope to get up to the Flying Dutchman’s ship. I know that Spongebob isn’t too intellectual, but this is my last resort and I’d really like to know. xD

Spongebob (looking up) : Ship!
Patrick : Spongebob, how long will you stay in your fantasy world?

My parents got the joke… what am I missing?

Must be something to do with the Flying Dutchman’s ship because the Flying Dutchman is a myth, a folklore.

That makes sense. I thought it was a reference to another generation. Or something.

Darn thing linky.

You were super close on the link!

.. I don’t think we should analyze Spongebob!

troubleinharlem's avatar

@naivete : well I wanted to know why they said that.

karentookawalk's avatar

@naivete Eh? It didn’t require too much analysis, it was just a question on why something from a spongy cartoon character wearing pants would be so funny to the oldies.

I don’t think it means anything. I don’t see anything to “get.” Why don’t you ask your parents what they believe it means? I watch way too much Spongebob, and I rarely look into what is being said.

As an avid Spongebob watcher, here is my diagnosis. Patrick, who is not intelligent, is telling Spongebob to stop believing in such things as the Flying Dutchman (and his ship). The joke is that Patrick who is always quick to believe anything he hears refuses to believe in the ship even though it is in plain sight.

I have a masters in Spongebobistry

yeah, he saw a ship above him, and said “ship”. Patric didn’t believe him because ships obviously don’t exist and are only fairy tails. Its like saying you saw a flying cow, but people don’t end up believing you.

What @J0E said. Or to quote Patrick “Duh…”

I don’t understand all you Spongebob people :-)

Oh, I thought it was their way of saying “shit” on a children’s show. Like “holy ship!”

Shipping is the idea that two people, usually fictional, can have a romantic relationship. Ship is derived from the word relationship. If you want a couple to be together, you ship them. However, shipping a couple is often fantasy, and the couple may very well never get together, which is why Patrick tells Spongebob to get out of his fantasy world.

Really? How old are you guys, because it’s simple. There is a little thing in this world called shipping, where they put two people into a fantasy “relationship” it can be between characters in a book, or tv show,or in real life. Basically, Patrick, being the guy he is, doesn’t understand that spongebob is pointing out a PIRATE ship, so he thinks that sponegbob is pointing out a ship, as in a fantasy relationship, and he says to spongebob, how long are you going to stay in your little fantasy world, because he thinks sponegbob is pointing out a fantasy relationship. It’s a bit complicated but, maybe you will get it soon. It was just a joke put in by the creators
