Is it dangerous to be startled out of your sleep?

Asked by Facade (22937points) November 16th, 2009

Most of the time when I wake up in the morning/ afternoon, it’s from being startled. A loud noise, a dream, etc. My heart pounds (which is my main concern).

Is this something to be concerned about when it’s pretty much every day?

No.

Edit: Unless of course you are 85 years old with a heart condition… ;-)

I think that’s the only answer I need, you being a doctor and all :)

Isn’t that the prime function of a damn alarm clock?

Facade's avatar

@faye Yes, I’m just wondering how healthy it is.

I don’t think it’s dangerous (especially if @shilolo says it’s not!), but if it’s annoying, why don’t you try one of those alarm clocks than can come on gradually? I know that waking up like that would make me really jumpy!

On the rare occasion that my husband’s alarm clock beats our daughter to waking me up, I have to peel myself off the ceiling. It is an excellent way to make sure my reflexes are still up to par.

I have to vouch for an alarm clock like that too. I had one that did that at home because I hated being startled awake. I’m not sure if it was unhealthy, but it did cause my heart to pound and it was not pleasant. The current clock I have actually has a quiet high-pitched alarm but it seems to work every time. Actually getting out of bed is where I have the problem…

No. As long as it’s not a daily experience over many years.
