Is Christmas getting out of control?

Asked by tyrantxseries (4722points) November 19th, 2009

The true(original) meaning of Christmas has been washed away by the mighty Dollar(the new meaning of Christmas)

The commercialization of Christmas is staggering, I started seeing Christmas shit in stores around October 3rd, Christmas commercials since October 10th and it’s just got worse since then. I just got my 15 pound sears catalog in the mail, along with the Walmart/Zellers fliers (or books)I almost threw my back out trying to catch the fucking adds spilling out of my mail box, it was full to the top (no real mail, just ads)(also the TV/radio/newspaper ads are in high gear)
Now Christmas music is starting to play on the radio,
and it is only going to get worse…

Is there a way we or more accurately the Christians can fix this holiday to it’s somewhat original meaning?
And Make the stores wait until a reasonable date to start bombarding us?
before they try to sell this shit year round

Was Christmas really ever under control?

Incidentally, the original meaning of Christmas is not what our Christian friends tell us it is. They’re the ones who started hijacking the festivity and changing its meaning.

I say the same thing I always do about Christmas: it has two sides, a religious side and a secular side. The two sides are different and it is possible to celebrate both or one or the other. And yes, pagans, Saturnalia (or is it Lupercalia?), Catholic, presents, Santa, whatever…I don’t care. I celebrate both the religious and the secular side of Christmas and that’s fine with me. They have different purposes.

And I think that there should be a law that says no freakin’ Christmas products in stores until after Thanksgiving. So there. For me, it makes the season more special to have it condensed to a shorter period of time.

Yeah, you never hear anything about Yule or Saturnalia anymore. Sol Invictus is the Reason for the Season!

@laureth
I have half a mind to make a habit of wishing people a “merry Winter Solstice.”

It’s been out of control for many years now due to consumerism and greed. I am unfortunately cast into it due to having a Catholic family and upbringing, as well as having a daughter. Every year I try to only give small gifts to the kids, but I cannot get my family to stop buying me gifts, and understand that I only want to spend time with them. I personally could care less about either the Pagan or the Christian celebration, I just wish it would go away and be replaced with something like Family Day, Charity Day, Massage Day or Appreciate What You Have Day.

I think the only way the Christians can fix it is to try and remove the greed from it. In other words, make it more about what it was supposed to be, and less about frivolous gifts, corny decorations, candy etc, for their children, and put more focus back on the religious and family aspect. This has to start with the parents, and would have to continue from there. Would it really hurt anyone but the Wal-Marts and Targets, to give a child only one or two small thoughtful gifts?

I love the commercial aspect of Christmas. I love the spirit of gift giving. Brightening the days of those you love. And I can’t think of anything better to celebrate than the advancements that have made it possible for us all to buy each other things. When Christmas comes around I like to think of how far civilization has come from the days when most people worked in agriculture and life was so much harder. Look at all the wonderful things that mankind has accomplished. Why wouldn’t we share the benefits of those accomplishments with the people we love?

…while we still have them, and before we all have to work in agriculture again. ;)
