It’s different for every state. In MA you take a 15-question multiple choice quiz on a computer screen. It’s wicked easy, like what color a stop sign is. I’m sure you can look up the format on your DMV’s website.

What state are you in?

Well from my experience, the test to get your permit in Texas is a simple test on a computer over the driver’s manual you receive. It depends on what state you live in, but it’s over common sense stuff. Just look over the material before you take it to be safe..

The book they give you in CA has bullet points. Most of the questions come from those. Read it and you should be fine. You will probably only miss the random shit about how many yards before a turn you need to start your blinker.

Get the California Driver Handbook (at the DMV, it’s free) http://i27.tinypic.com/2wfpidd.jpg and read it over. All the permit test questions come from it.

I’m in NY and all the permit test consisted of was a bunch of multiple choice questions on a sheet of paper. They also supplied a book to read through to help prepare you for the type of questions the test would have. More than 5 wrong and you’d fail. But that was years ago. I’m not sure how it’s done now.
