When my cell phone drops a call in my girlfriend's apartment i hear weird whispering voices as interference... What is this and why does it happen in the kitchen or bathroom especially when the dryer is running?

Asked by duckyevans (13points) November 30th, 2009

This is a reocurring problem that is real… not sure what it is but i can create it with those specified conditions almost all the time… its a cell phone phenomenon that i want to understand rather than be afraid of…

You hear them too?

It’s most likely picking up on someone else’s (or several other people’s) cell conversations. No need to be scared.

Oh you’re just jealous ‘cause the voices only talk to us. :0)

GSM technology multiplexes the conversations using digital encoding, so i don’t think overhearing should be possible over the transmission (in opposition to old analog phones where it was perfectly possible to overhear another conversation). Atleast a google for “GSM overhearing” seems to yield suspiciously few hits.

What i think is happening is that your dryer is generating lots of electromagnetic disturbance (they are well known to do that, the rotating parts of the electric engine creates an oscillating magnetic field) other sources of EMF might be tumblers, elevator engines, cars on the street, etc. This is getting induced into the phones speaker and chipset, creating the disturbances.

As an experiment you could try setting a pair of old unshielded cheap PC speakers (the poorer quality the better, think walmart) next to the dryer (they are usually great at picking up EMF), turn them on, and see if you get lots of noise generated in the speakers. Also see the sibling thread http://www.fluther.com/disc/29473/what-is-this-weird-interference-between-my-phone-and-my-computer/ where this phenomenon is noted.

You might also think about buying a new dryer, or trying to earth it, as it sounds like it is poorly shielded.

Is this an old analog cell phone? Most of the newer cell phones are digital, and I am unaware of this ever happening with those.

this is an iphone… and eventhough im abale to recreate the phenomenon in the same place with the dryer on; This seems to be a problem exclusive to at&t customers… and i cant shake the feeling that i am hearing a professionally recorded hoax. My girlfriend said the same thing happened to her with her iphone but in a different place entirely, in her car. A dropped call with a suspicious sounding interference… Ive done a little internet research and found a few similar accounts… people here digital breakup that sounds like fast whispering voices and some other disturbing sounds… anyone else hear this phenomenon? and is this just a really weird electro magnetic disturbance?

As I said on your other question, your place is an interstellar bypass and that’s not a dryer, it’s a toll booth.

Actually, a lot of electrical equipment can screw around with cell phone signals. However, I must admit that my whole family has AT&T and we have never had anything like this happen to us. I suspect it is as @nisse says.
