How do I get my cat to stop pooping everywhere?

Asked by kyraugh (201points) December 14th, 2009

My cat is very sweet but seems to have this evil streak. She recently lost her buddy (my other cat passed away this summer) and of late, whenever I am away from home for more than 12 hrs (I work a lot) she leaves me little poops everywhere – except in her litter box.
I’m certain that she is lonely and this is her way of letting me know that she doesn’t like it when I’m not home but this is unacceptable. When I am home we hang out a lot and she gets lots of love.
Her litter box is clean and easily accessible and I haven’t changed her routine at all (she used to use it) but now she just doesn’t use it at all. Who knows where she’s even peeing…
Besides me not leaving my house or getting her a friend, how do I stop her from pooing all over my place and return to using her litter box?

Maybe you should try to re-train her to use the litter pan. I’ve never had to do this, so I can’t give you any pointers on potty training cats.

Confine him to the room with the litter. Also try a covered Litter box. If its already covered, try uncovering it. You could also try putting the litter where he likes to poop.

The cat litter that you currently have- did it say “New formula!” or “New and Improved Odor Control” around that time that this started happening? This could be a considered a ‘litter change’ to her.

Always rule out physical causes with a trip to the vet.

Assuming the problem is behavioral, you are going to have a lot of trouble dealing with this. Behavior has to be addressed the moment the cat exhibits the unwanted behavior. Doesn’t seem like you can do this.

Is there a reason you cannot provide a new companion for your cat? Maybe you can have someone stop by and spend time with kitty.

Your cat will never be happy with you away so much, especially because she is not usedro being alone for such long periods of time.

Very good Tinyfaery! Spending time with any animals avoids behavioral problems!

Multiple litter boxes all over the house. If she has favorite corners to poo in, put a litter box there.

This has worked in my personal experience, but if she is missing her friend you may want to look into getting another cat.

This is by no means a permanent solution, just until she starts pooping in the litter only, then you can gradually decrease the number of boxes.

Thanks everyone. I think I’m going to try moving the box to another area of the house and re-train her there. I’m still debating on getting her a friend. Might not be a right time now though… want to give her all the love and attention I can and wouldn’t want her to get jealous.

If you do get another cat, your cat may also hate the new cat in the beginning. Just be prepared for that. I do think that getting another one might be the best in the long run though. If your cat is a male, I wouldn’t get another male. I haven’t had the best of luck with two males. It sounds like your cat is still grieving the loss and is now just very lonely and taking it out on you.

May be the smell of the litter box reminds him of the missing cat. Try a new litter box, they’re cheap enough.
