Do people still carpet kitchen floors?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) December 16th, 2009

My home was built in 1957. all the floors are beautiful oak wood. my wife says her feet are cold in the kitchen and wants to install carpet over the oak flooring. i am dead set against this. i think it will be a waste of money, not to mention accidential spills. do people still have carpet on their kitchen floors?

Carpet in the kitchen is a terrible terrible idea.

Not where I live, it’s against fire code.

I never knew anyone with carpet in their kitchen. That’d be ridiculous.

I have a carpet in my kitchen although not through choice. I rent so ultimately it is up to my land lady. The house I live in was built in 1890, I don’t know what the floor is like underneith the carpet.

I have never heard of putting carpet in a kitchen. It sounds really hard to keep clean.

Can you imagine the dirt and oils all over that carpet?! I’d take the wood flooring over carpet anyday. It’s very rare to see carpets in kitchens these days, just not a good idea.

I have never seen carpet on kitchen floors. I do have a small mat infront of the sink.
Buy her a pair of nice, warm slip on shoes or thick socks. I’m forever walking around in my socks.

I have only had carpet in the kitchen once. NO, I didn’t install it and the first thing I did after moving in, was rip it out. Carpet in the kitchen = very bad idea (unless you never use the kitchen)

Terrible idea.
Tell your wife to put some slippers on. I’m sure she can get a pair at the dollar store instead of spending thousands on carpet.
Problem solved.

Ewwww… gross.

How about a mini heater, fuzzy slippers and lots of throw rugs??

When I purchased my Florida condo, it had the ugliest, thick, ceramic tile on the kitchen floor. Jackhammering it all out would have been a major, expensive, dust-generating, noisy project. I have had to suffer neighbors who did so.

Instead, I elected to go the easy route and install wall-to-wall carpeting over the tile. I should have bit the bullet, so to speak, and removed that tile, replacing it with attractive tile. My next project will be to do just that. I now apologize to my neighbors in advance, who will suffer the noisy/dirty discomfort of my doing so.

Having capeting on a kitchen floor is a bad…BAD….idea!

Gee, I hope not! What a bear that would be to keep clean!

I have only seen carpet in a kitchen once in my life and it was shocking to me. As a realtor I would say that it will be a big negative if you ever try to sell and your house is worth over $100K (unless maybe it is accepted more in very cold parts of the country). That probably sounds snobby, but I am just talking about what is customary at different price levels since you will be spending money on the flooring. But since it will be over oak I guess you can easily rip it up, assuming the tacking for the carpet doesn’t damage the wood floors? On another note carpet in areas of the home that have a lot of exposure to moisture like kitchens and bathrooms doesn’t make much logical sense to me. Seems like a lot of opportunity for mold to grow.

Having said that, carpet can be much better on the legs and back, and women tend to spend a lot of time working in the kitchen. I would use throw rugs or gel matts and splurge on two pairs of really nice slippers.

Really? Do people do that or did that?

Makes no sence to me. Unless you do not use your kitchen.

thriftymaid's avatar

I remember that from like the 70s. I thought it was a gross idea then and still do. I haven’t even heard anybody mention it in years.

CMaz's avatar

I have been to the 70’s.

I have never seen that.

@ChazMaz . Kitchen carpet was sold when I was a kid. I can’t even imagine having carpet in the kitchen.

@ChazMaz LMFAO! You have been to the 70’s. I love that.

my mother in law has had kitchen carpet with a rubber backing in her kitchen & eating area for 29 years it looks great , it is now a bit worn but otherwise the color has keep well & there are hardly any stains . she would love to get another one, but is finding it hard to buy one now as they only make outdoor carpets. if anyone know where you can buy kitchen carpet nowadays that would be great . she swears by them. you vacuum & spot clean no trouble at all. I had kitchen carpet for a few years & found it easier to keep than vinyl.

I just put a piece of carpet over the middle of my kitchen floor. I love it and throw it away every year or two. It keeps the floor warm and my legs and back from hurting.
No need to do more than an area rug but don’t get the real thin kind that feels real nasty on the feet.

You’re all nuts. We don’t prepare food on the floor or eat off it. What do you walk in from the street into your nice living rooms??? Get real. I’ve got cfs and 3 dogs. Mopping the floor is a task that takes me days to recover from. Get a carpet, put rugs down in crucial areas, and get a life. Like roz1957, just chuck the rugs away now and again.

I have to comment on this page. I was looking for a place online that sells kitchen carpeting, when I ran across this site. Maybe I am “old school”, but all of you complaining about getting the carpet dirty in a kitchen, I have to ask you how often you sweep and mop your floors? It has been my experience that vinyl, linoleum, or any kind of tile is much harder to keep clean than carpeting. I would much rather vacuum and run my carpet shampooer than sweep n mop all the time. Yes, carpet requires one to be a litte more careful about dropping food on the floor, but it seems that it is a matter of whether or not you are a clean person about the rest of your home, also. Anyway, if anyone knows where I can buy some nice kitchen carpet, let me know.

Yes, people still put carpet in Kitchens. I will be putting it in my Kitchen in the next few days. If you get the right kind, like roz1957 said “my mother in law has had kitchen carpet with a rubber backing in her kitchen & eating area for 29 years it looks great”. That is why you see carpet in so many restaurant’s dining areas. (Didn’t think about that did you?) If you are a bit messy when you cook you can put another piece of throw-away carpet in front of your stove and sink. Rubber backed carpet squares are good for covering less then perfect floors. You can put them over sub-floor, hardwood, or old vinyl flooring. becky2011 This seems to be a place to get fair price and lots of choices. http://www.carpetbargains.com I am sure that there are others.
