Should I buy a Canon Powershot or EOS?

Asked by nmguy (528points) December 26th, 2009

I can’t decide whether to buy a Powershot G10 or an EOS Rebel XS.

Living in New Mexico, I take lots of landscape and nature shots and am looking for something that’s a bit more versatile than my current Powershot SD800 is.

It depends on what you really want to do with it.

The couple of decision points:
If you want it to go in your pocket, get the G10.
If you want to be able to buy different lenses for it, buy the Rebel.

(There’s really more, but those are the two key points)

(From your PM—sounds like you want to be able to do wide angle), the G10 can do that, with the following parts:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/587453-REG/Canon_3151B001_LA_DC58K_Lens_Adapter.html#accessories (which has a 58mm front thread)

and this:

That’s a pricey combo, you can get cheaper adapter lenses, with equally poor optics.

If the quality of the optic train is important, then go with the Rebel, you can get very nice Canon glass to go on that (and upgrade the glass at a later point).

The G10/G11 zooms as much as a cheap pocket camera. Just be warned. 5x is not a lot.

I realized that after getting the G10 that I needed more zoom. I still have it and it’s a great camera, but man, it’s not for taking pictures of lacrosse games…

DominicX: What other digital cameras would you recommend that are in the same price range, if this one doesn’t measure up?
