What is the best present you got this holiday season?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) December 28th, 2009

Was it a material thing or a nice gesture? Or even the gift of doing good for someone else. Was it something you wanted, or a big surprise? Let’s compare loot. :p

I gave and got a lot of nice presents this year. My sister got me this great perfume that I wasn’t expecting and didn’t even know I wanted. Originally I wanted this perfume that smells… kind of like weed and patchouli. This perfume that she got me smells like the fresh ocean breeze, soap, and just-laundered clothes. I never would have thought I’d like something like this, but apparently she knew me better than I knew myself. It smells sooooo good. I just want to roll around in it. Usually we haven’t even exchanged presents when we were younger, and it will be a nice memory because she’s heading overseas soon. I got her a vintage bracelet and a usb drive full of music.

What about you guys?

my grand-kids faces grinning up at me as they ripped thier pressies open was priceless, My in-laws staying for 2 weeks over christmas is a total pain in the derriere, and the Sony Reader my good lady gave me is a brilliant present!
I bought her shoes, I’ve never bought her shoes before and WILL NEVER but her shoes again, it was more stressful than you’d believe….........

My partner got me one of those ipod stereo docking station thingy-ma-whatsits. It wasn’t a surprise because when he asked me what I wanted this year, I told him.

We went shopping today at the mall and he took me into a jewellery shop and said he wanted to get me a ring or necklace for Christmas as a surprise but wanted me be able to pick it out… it was incredibly sweet and uncharacteristically romantic in the more traditional sense than he usually exhibits.

I was touched :)

Hee hee, clever boy getting it at Boxing Day Sale prices! LOL – I’m still touched though!

My dad got me a bed. Yes, a bed. The old one I had, I had for far too long and I slept horribly on it. So badly that I completely stopped sleeping at all, took off the mattress, and replaced it with an air mattress. I slept with an air mattress on the box frame for well over a year, and eventually I stopped sleeping at all on that, too. So, he bought me a queen sized bed, made out of clouds – I swear sleeping on clouds would feel no different. It was amazing, and I’m very thankful. I can actually sleep again. And with recent happenings, it helps me sleep better than I would without it, because I was too depressed and stressed to sleep at all again.

A clean kitchen. No, you guys think I’m joking or being sarcastic, but I’m not. The worst thing about cooking up a big, festive meal is the cleaning afterwards. When I’m at home in California, the golden rule is: he who cooks shouldn’t have to clean. But here with the mevrouw’s family, somehow the kitchen has wound up being totally my domain. Usually I don’t mind, but in the case of holidays . . . okay, I’m repeating myself.

Claudia’s boyfriend suggested it to her, and the two of them jumped up after dinner and made short work of the kitchen. Even down to the pots, pans and grill. The following morning I would walk into the clean kitchen with a tear in my eye, it was so wonderful. The gift that keeps on giving.

I think it has to be the fact that I wasn’t expecting much and got a lot from my parents…they told me they weren’t spending much this year and yet they have showered me and my son with presents

I generally have high expectations and get disappointed so this was amazing for me…the best actual present out of the lot has to be….hmmm…. um….. nope…I can’t choose…

Brandi Carlile – Give up the Ghost CD
Roderigo Y Gabriela – 11:11 CD
House MD Series 5
Grey’s Anatomy Series 4
Vimrod Calender 2010…it’s hilarious!
Miracles Are Made Of This by Julia Heywood

Books – Music – TV…what more could a girl desire

I got some socks and a Rubik’s cube, that’s enough for me. Who would have thought I’d ever be happy with socks for Christmas (certainly not as a little kid 15 years ago), next year I’m asking Santa to solve the cube for me though!

As I grow older I want gifts that represent emotional value over monetary value. Sure it’s cliché to mention this, but even this year I saw so many people around me spend a huge amount of money on gifts but no thought, it’s baffling.

Peace and quiet to help me reassemble my sanity.@haleth that perfume you got sounds like the kind that was Meghans favorite :^) Great question ++.

I was alone in the house. People get so stressed when they have to make big meals.

And I got a smoker so I can start making my own jerky.

I do not have the money to celebrate Christmas in any way. Also, my wife has a very hard time at this time of the year so I just tried to keep her occupied and her mind engaged so things would not bother her. My wife’s mother died due to medical murder malpractice on Christmas and her father’s birthday was in the mid of December, he also died due to medical torture and murder malpractice. This month sucks for her, especially Christmas.

Keeping her occupied nonstop in things that we can enjoy (and can afford) was my “present” to her. Her smiling and laughing at times (rather than tears) was the greatest present ever to me. I drank extra coffee to make sure that I would be able to keep her solidly occupied. If we stopped whatever we were doing, the melancholy would set in and I could see the tears about to start.

Those smiles and laughs were the ultimateâ„¢ present.

My wife and i had wanted a 32 inch flatscreen television for a long time. we already knew the location for the television in our home, once we were fortunate enough to receive one. have you really ever had a Christmas wish come true? well, it happened to us. check this out….... wife and i play bingo. one night, they were giving away a Sports Wii. i bought tickets and i won it! not knowing what to do with it without a big screen tv, we just held onto it. one week later, my wife wins another Wii, in another drawing at bingo. now, we have two Wiis and no bigscreen television. the very next night, my wife wins a $500 dollar bingo game and this was our Christmas present. we take one Wii and the $500 dollars and buy our 32 inch Samsung flatscreen television. what did we do with the extra Wii we won? sent it to our grandson in Seattle for Christmas. this made his day. Christmas wishes do come true. i must add this. this was not luck, it was a blessing. a Christmas blessing. we gracefully gave our thanks in our prayers.

My mom found the entire series of Farscape on DVD. We have been searching for that forever and she finally found it! We watched a huge amount on Christmas and the day after. :)

The best present I gave is a toss up between the mah jong set I got for my mother and the locket I got for my grandmother. I almost never plan out what I’m getting for anybody. I usually just walk into a store and see what looks good for someone. For my mom, I was in a game shop for a card tournament and they had this beautiful complete mah jong set. She’s been talking about it for years and hasn’t played in a long time and she loved it!

For my grandmother, I was on Etsy just looking at random stuff when I saw this locket. It’s vintage style with a big ceramic piece on it with a picture of a lighthouse. My grandmother loves lighthouses so I ordered it for her. She said it was the best present she got this year. :)

A RICE COOKER! I’ve always wanted one but never asked for one. My Mom somehow read my mind. I’ve never been so excited!

As for non-material goods, I got to be with all of my family over the holidays and that was wonderful. My Grandma was in the present with us, which is becoming less and less likely, and she seemed tickled with the gift I gave her. Just being with friends and family was so wonderful. I feel like I’m still riding high from it.

@PapaLeo

Can I borrow your family? I had a Christmas/Birthday party on Saturday, and I just can not bring myself to attack that pile of dishes. 20 hours straight of cooking, 12 hours of partying… no, I don’t think I should have to do the washing-up. Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t agree. Dammit. I want an Oompa-Loompa. Now!

@SarasWhimsy I got a rice cooker as well, from my kids and I’ve always wanted one, too but figured that was just being lazy. My daughters gave me framed pictures for my family wall!

For helping others; I did my annual being Santa for the Children’s Home nearby… and; I worked at the Homelesss Shelter for a couple of hours before coming back home to have my Christmas with my extended family…

Then; I had not really planned on buying for my nephew’s girlfriend ; but I saw the Snuggies on sale and i got one for her and she went crazy about how she loved it ! She went in an dput it on and wore it all afternoon and evening… showing it off to everyone who came by… so I really felt good about that…

Lastly; I received a FruitCake which I dearly LOVE , so I was overjoyed ; PLUS I received a low crown, wide brim black hat like I weat much of the time… and I needed another on e..so I was extremely pleased .

I hate to play favorites, but my youngest son created a book about how much he loves me. One page said “I love you more than Mom loves to go to movies on Saturday.” That right there is a lot of love and a very sweet gift!
