32" Monitor/HDTV with the best refresh rate?

Asked by victord66 (201points) January 12th, 2010

I currently have a Samsung 24” 244T monitor which has a 60hz. Refresh rate. I would like to upgrade to a 32” monitor since I watch a lot of films that are stored on my pc. Ideally I would like a monitor with a higher refresh rate. I have been told I can use an HDTV for this. My video card (SAPPHIRE HD5870 1GB GDDR5 PCIE Game Edition) has Dual DL-DVI-I+DP+HDMI, Triple Display Support.

I am considering this Sony product:
http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1006203&navigationPath=n32050n100472n100443

However in the product manual on page 17 it seems to imply that the pc inputs will only offer 60hz.refresh rate even using HDMI.
Are there any 32” products either stand alone pc monitors or HDTV’s that will give me a higher refresh rate? I’m not interested in watching TV, just using this as a pc monitor.

Thanks.

What’s the point of having a great refresh rate if you’re not going to use it for video viewing? As a PC monitor, what you should be looking for is Screen Resolution…the higher the number, the better. 27” or larger monitors that have low resolution are pointless and would give youa headache. If ind a 24” or 26” widescreen monitor ideal as a PC monitor, enabling me to open 2 panes of browsers side by side.

My other suggestion for a PC application is to actually use 2 or 4 separate monitors. Again, this is all relative to what you will be doing.

Actually njnyjobs, you missed my point. I will be using this monitor mostly for viewing video,(films which I have stored on my hard drives) which is why I want a higher refresh rate. Higher refresh rate = better picture quality, no? At least with action films.

I just won’t be using the monitor for watching any broadcast TV programs.

You may want to check Philips 32” PFL6704D/F7 120Hz 2MS 1080p LCD HDTV out.
It’s rates at 120Hz and 2ms pixel response time ata round $800.

Not exactly meeting your 32” requirement. An Apple 30” Cinema HD or a Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor. Both actually are in the $1700.-1800 price range.

@victord66 Refresh rate is only important if you are buying a CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor, because the image on a CRT decay and so needs to be renewed constantly. Given that the year is 2010 I’m going to assume you will be buying an LCD panel. The closest an LCD panel gets to a refresh rate is called response time ie how quickly the individual cells respond to an instruction. The image doesn’t flicker as the pixel stays at whatever setting it was given until it gets new instructions. The fact that your graphics card asks for a refresh rate is nothing more than a throw back to the days of CRT monitors.

Also if you are only going to watch films on it you should bear in mind that most movies are shot at 24 frames a second ie 24hz and looks best on a screen that can refresh at 24 fps.
