If you were a school teacher what grade/ age would you teach and why?

Asked by marco_esquandolis (71points) January 14th, 2010

I want a new job that I can get something out of besides just a paycheck. I thought that shaping young minds and educating someone so they could potentially have better futures would be more fulfilling, but I don’t know what age group I would like to teach. Looking back I wish I would have had more direction when I was a teenager to help me find my passions and to help me set goals for my future, but teenagers seem to have worse attitudes compared to younger children. On the other hand, younger children are still just learning the basics and most are not ready to start finding their own path. I want to have the most impact that I can.

I’d want to teach any grade between 5 and 7, inclusive, and/or at the university level, but that’s me. You need to decide for yourself because I don’t know you. I suggest reading the book Do What You Are for insight into the different Myers-Briggs personality types as well as The Pathfinder by Nicholas Lore for a holistic choose-a-career guide. Are you sure that you want to be a teacher? I am amazed by teenagers that hit the career choice nail on the head the first time while they are in high school picking a college. I did not know myself, nor did I know how to research, well enough at 17 to make a great decision. Now 7 years later, I am in a much better position to do it. Don’t regret that your career path is not a straight line – chalk it up to experience and use the skills you have acquired in your prior work to make you a more competitive candidate in your new chosen field.

Fourth year University or graduate school.

I’m actually studying to be a High School music teacher. I think when it comes to music (at least vocal) it’s easier to work with them after they’ve gone through puberty and their voices are fully developed. Plus, I think at the high school level you can treat them more like adults and expect more from them.

Kindergarten.

Kids after that age become total assholes until they are at least 25.

I’m planning on eventually teaching graduate school, myself, if that counts.

I would be a high school teacher teaching Latin. I’m still considering it as a possible job. It’s a very possible possibility. :P

I would love to teach Latin; I totally could too. You don’t have to speak it fluently to teach it. It’s taught as a written language. I could also teach linguistics if that was ever offered as a class at a school.

I could also teach middle school Latin. I don’t really care about the age or the grade, just as long as it’s Latin. :)

I am.

I prefer 3rd grade. You don’t feel as though you’re babysitting (much like 1st grade), nor are you dealing with attitudes (grade 4, that’s when the attitude starts). And, I find that they’re so eager to learn at that age.

I’ve got a good group of kids. :)

I taught primarily 3rd (sometimes combined with 4th) grade for many years and absolutely loved it. My training was for HS English but I’m glad I didn’t end up there.

8–9 yr. olds are past the ages where they can’t tie their shoes or put on their own coats etc. They are independent enough in terms of being able to express themselves in basic writing and know enough Math to build upon.

But they still aren’t old enough for the snotty, crappy, lippy stages that older kids go through. There is still a delightful basic innocence and childlike sense of wonder about them. They have not yet become cynical or jaded.

I enjoyed every minute of my time with them.

I would teach senior physics, because they are capable of higher reasoning and can learn by discussion rather than instruction. Physics was my best and favourite subject at school, and I would like to show future generations the beauty of the universe and the equations that describe it.

@Buttonstc that’s pretty much what I said, but, you said it better. :)

AP Calculus 12, or AP Physics 12 for high school.

Those are the classes that I found to have the least annoying kids in them. My friends and I absolutely tortured our teachers in the others.

Any University Science class would do.

I’m working towards an elementary license and I hope to teach 1st grade.
I love that they’re still excited about school and learning. I love that they’re being taught the fundamentals for more complex ideas. And I love that they’re still cute lil munchkins.

High school Spanish. I don’t really connect well with younger kids.

I have taught at university level, as well at lower levels. The kids I have the most fun with are kinder through about 4th grade. Older than that and the bad language and bad attitudes seem to start. Besides, in the younger grades you can introduce kids to reading and books before they’ve decided they don’t like to read, and you can also work with kids who are going to be square pegs in the school system’s round holes and help them fit better.
