What's the fairest sport in terms of body type?

Asked by 6rant6 (13700points) January 20th, 2010

A lot of games favor the tall – basketball, volleyball, tetherball. Some favor the lean – cross country, women’s gymnastics. Some are so bad that competition across sizes is forbidden – boxing, weightlifting, etc.

What do you think is the most body neutral sport? (And lets say a sport is something where you sweat and get an elevated heart rate from activity – so not chess, or darts.) Extra points for team sports.

I second golf. Maybe squash

Bowling
Ping-Pong

I question their legitimacy as sports, though.

Yeah….I’m pretty sure…...it’s only golf.

I think soccer. Sure, you have to be able to run around and kick, but I don’t think body type/size enters into it much.

@janbb Lol…..Weight definitely has a factor in cardio…...

Soccer can be a very neutral sport. For every body type there is some position on the field that could suit you. Big and Tall you could pull of as a good Central Defender or powerful Forward. Small and Agile you could be a very good offensive player. Medium with good stamina and speed your have potential to be a good midfielder.

Golf and Bowling (though they take skill) don’t seem to be as much of a sport that makes you work.

@Blackberry Well, yes you have to be fit for every sport, but as @TehRoflMobile says, there are positions for many body types in soccer.

No darts, huh? Okay, I’ll go with swimming, cycling, and skiing.

@janbb Ahh I see, makes sense.

I’m not sure golf qualifies as a sport by my definition. I’m not saying top golfers don’t workout to keep sharp, but so do poker players. I guess I’m thinking golf isn’t aerobic by itself. And please don’t tell me that walking a golf course is a sport!

Beer drinking and fart sniffing.

@6rant6 I agree with you. I think there should be some new term used to define sport. For me there are two kinds of sport, the physical and the skill. While there would be overlapping in each of these categories I should be fairly easy to separate sports into these categories.

Golf, Darts, Bowling are all sports in the sense of you use your body and you have to learn to use it specifically (which takes a great bit of skill). However I would put them into skill.

As for Soccer, Basketball and so on it takes quite a bit of skill to dribble and shoot, but you also have to have endurance, speed, agility and strength, making a physical sport.

Yeah, so back to the question… a sport… meaning aerobic… so you can’t wear, “slacks”... preferably team…

wrestling – team sport (get points for a win to your overall score) and you wrestle your own body weight.

Dodge ball and thumb wrestling!!

Archery and tantrum throwing?

Tennis. Billy Jean King was very tall. Bobby Riggs was pretty short.

I would think that in golf there would be a major difference based on the height of the golfer due to the velocity of the swing.. I could be wrong..

The fairest sport? Hmm… cup stacking? I don’t know.

@andrew . . . does coke count for or against the “elevated heart rate issue”?

Extreme Ironing is pretty fair, as you just need to work on those wrist actions.

The gold medal goes to dodge ball, the silver to soccer and the bronze to ping pong. In dodge ball, it’s good to be big – and throw hard. And it’s good to be small and dodge well. You can also run a lot, or a little, depending on your nerve and skills. But whatever shape you are, it’d better be good. Kudos @Cruiser !

Biking? Swimming? Have you SEEN the people at the top? They all look the same.

And tennis has more and more become a tall person’s game. Yes there may be exceptions, but there are short people in basketball, too. It’s just a huge disadvantage to be overcome.

@oceaneblue

I think Michael Phelps provides a stunning peace of evidence to the contrary.
