I would like a remote for the computer (like a TV remote), but I don't know where to get one. Does anyone have one, and where did you get it?

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) January 24th, 2010

My family watches alot of TV online, but my parents don’t like food getting near the computer, so we always have to have somebody get up to control it. A remote would make it so much easier. Does such a thing exist? If you have one, how much did it cost? Was it easy to set up? I would rather get suggestions from people that already have one than from somebody just googling it.

Well, macintosh has one that’s like $10. They used to come with the laptops. They work just great, although you have to be careful if you have two macs in the same room since it’ll work on any mac indiscriminately, aka pausing your video might make iTunes in the other computer start playing. It’s funny till it’s annoying. :)

edited to add that I assume it only works on macs, so if you have a windows machine I guess this isn’t very helpful… Sorry!

Yeah and sorry to jump on the Mac bandwagon, you can also control the Mac from an iPhone or iPod Touch, there’s an app for that…I can actually control my Roku from my iPhone too.

Sweet I wish I had a mac! I’m totally gonna try to make my family get a mac for the next computer.

Remotes for windows machine are usually available with media centers…bought at the same time.
But you must start out with a Media center. Dell makes them as well as HP.

@Tropical_Willie—would a “media center” mean some kind of a printer?

@ChocolateReigns

The media center is like the box ( computer ) you have now, CPU with Hard drive and keyboard…
It has connections for TV ( monitor ) and usually has remote and network capabilities.

Google “Moneual” and see BIG Money box only good for media center.

My remote came bundled with the Snow Leopard on new desktop Mac.

I bought a TV tuner from my desktop computer (pinnacle), and that came with a remote. I’ve had it for about 18 months now, and it was $90 when I bought it.
