What different angles can I take on a college project about binge drinking?

Asked by dazedandconfused (545points) January 24th, 2010

I’m doing a 5000 word journalism project informing the public—mainly young people—about binge drinking. I need to have many different angles, and wonder if anyone has some unique ideas. By angles I mean subtopics, such as the dangers of it, who is at risk, why young people binge drink, what can be done etc. Any creative ideas, or possible explanations to the problems posed would be helpful.

Great topic. You could do a survey of people under the age of 25, and ask them how much they drink and how often, and do they think it’s possible for someone under the age of 25 to be an alcoholic.

Whatever you come up with, here’s some good statistics

As an attendee of West Virginia University, I feel I may be able to help with this. Lol

Many campuses offer alternative activities to do on Friday and Saturday nights. But many times they arn’t enough. I can’t say I’ve really heard about anything fun at our “up all night” aside from free food. Research those kinds of things in your area, I’m sure youll find something there to talk about.

As I’m sure you’re know, many younger adults drink when they’re in pain. Some research and awareness about the negative effects of this may also be helpful in your essay. I know I for one have almost drank myself to death many times. It was never on purpose, it was always more “I’m gonna drink till I’m happy again” with an handle or so of something. Never worked.

@PandoraBoxx had it right with many people developing drinking problems at this point in life, I actually fear my brother is one of them, scary stuff.

But the biggest thing in my mind is probably this idea that being in college, the cool thing to do is to get completely trashed and make an ass of yourself. If possible look into how it could be possible to turn this hype around. I don’t know about you, but there have been many many nights that I wish didn’t happen because of the things I have done while drunk, and I’m only in my 2nd year. =/

Hope this helped. Best of luck.

Why people think they need to drink to have fun
The popularity of drinking vs. smoking weed
The incidence of alcoholism in underage drinkers, including young teens
Drunkenness and intoxication in school
What constitutes a binge vs. fairly steady/regular drinking
What happens when you combine alcohol with other active substances (both Rx and non)
How to know if a person’s drinking is a serious problem
The cost in dollars to society

Just for good measure. People under 18 that like to show off how much they drink arn’t cute or cool… They’re sad and pathetic…

I wonder if less people would binge drink if there was no legal drinking age. Maybe then buying a beer would be as exciting as buying a bar of soap.

What should be the university’s role in controlling binge drinking at colleges; should it be different for underage drinkers and for legal drinkers?

I would go to an AA meeting and get real life stories (anonymous of course) from the people who have lived and traveled that road to hell that binge drinking can lead to.

Compile medical information as to how destructive it is to the body. Sight examples of others hardships.

You can approach it from the addiction and long term health standpoint. There is the issue of it interfering with education. There is the immediate aspect of violence and rape as well.
