Is there a purposefully bad translator?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) January 24th, 2010

In recent efforts to be funny, I began wondering if there was such a thing as a translator that gave back funny translations on purpose?

I don’t have the bookmarked website because I’m at work…but one of my favs is the 12 year-old AOLer translator. Just google AOLer translator and it should come up!

When I am really bored, I just use Babelfish.com and translate something from english to french, then french to Russian, then Russian to Spanish, then back to English.
Always fun to get the odd results.

There’s a site that does something like that automatically, it was floating around for a while but I can’t remember the URL.

@Ivan That’s exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

My results for that site were interesting:

The coffee is cold, the donut is stale, and the waitress looks like roadkill.
into Japanese
コーヒー、ドーナツ、失効され、ウェイトレス寒さ轢死ように見えます。
back into English
Coffee and donuts are stale, the cold seems to run over and killed a waitress.

During our 2008 summer vacation on the island of Santorini we made an usual experience. We were taking a boat trip stopping at some of the nearby smaller islands. Our group of tourists was very international and the travel guide made her announcements in several languages such as Greek, English, French, German and Italian. We couldn’t understand the Greek version, but all the others, and during one stop we were told to be back at the embarkation point at 11:15. But there was one exception: the Italians were told to be back at 11.

Bad translation? Well, some Italians do have a reputation for being late and it was the only explanation we could come up with. The boat left around 11:20.
