What are these little semi-hard things that come out of my mouth when I sneeze?

Asked by desiree333 (3219points) January 26th, 2010

I know this sounds really disgusting but there are these things that shoot out of my mouth when I sneeze. They are brownish-yellow, are shaped kind of like a little pyramid, and they smell like crap. I brush my teeth a lot, and I floss everyday plus use mouthwash. I always make sure my mouth is clean so I don’t understand why these things come out of my mouth. My sister thinks they a little things of plaque. I don’t believe her though because I never have plaque on my teeth because I brush them 3 times a day. Does anyone know what these things are, and how to get rid of them?

@desiree333 are these things always there, or are they are a recent development? Are you sick? Are you sure they are coming out of your mouth and not being ‘coughed up’ out of your throat?

Tonsil stones

linkage

They could be balled up mucus/pus/accumulated food that’s coming from the back of your throat or your tonsils. Check your tonsils in the mirror and see if there are white or yellow spots on them.

@___ Yeah, I am sick. Yes they do come out of my throat, my bad. And I have always had them, but lately they come out like veryday.

They’re definitely tonsil stones. Trust me.

I have a cousin who is a hygienist and she’s told us a few horror stories. She said that they’re foul smelling and annoying little fuckers. Type up tonsil stones in Google images and have a look. I can’t bare to look at them.

@jmah Yeah, I google image searched them, and they look exactly like the pictures.
@le_inferno ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…. And I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right thing but I can’t really see anything.

Does anyone know how to prevent them, and if they cause bad breath? because they smell like shit

@desiree333@jmah is right, that’s what they are. It’s essentially what I described. Maybe you should see an ENT to consider removing your tonsils if this is a chronic problem.
I saw an ENT since I have abnormally huge tonsils that sometimes get swollen, but he said he felt removal wouldn’t be worth it, unless I got strep/tonsillitis chronically, or had sleep apnea, or something really hazardous like that. I’m not sure what the protocol for tonsil stones would be, but I would go check it out with the doctor. The ENT may not remove them, but I’m sure he or she would be able to give you some treatment.

go to the dr. sounds like a sinus infection it won’t clear up till you get some medication clue: bad smell

Yes, I agree with these folks.
Go to the doctor for a throat culture. This is not a sign of health.
And if you have a fever too, could be a bad infection.
I wish you good wellness @desiree333

@trailsillustrated Thanks, I think I do have a sinus infection because I’ve been sick on and off for a couple of weeks.

@OneMoreMinute Thank you.

These sound like ‘tonsil stones’ which are created when your tonsils collect food as it passes through, and then it calcifies. If you press on your tonsils, you’ll see them popping out of the holes on the top. They’re pretty gross. Talk to your primary care doc about whether or not they indicate a chronic tonsillitis, or whether or not you should consider having your tonsils removed.
