Which is the poorest country in the world?

Asked by chaostheory (201points) February 4th, 2010

We were thinking about sponsoring a child through World Vision, and the kids wanted to know which was the poorest country in the world. Does anyone know?

I think it doesnt really matter which is the poorest country. . . helping out the kids in any poor country would be noble as it is. . . It could even be a kid in your own home town.

It might be Chad, but it hardly matters. Need is universal.

I remember it used to be bangladesh. I don’t know if it’s still the top ranking but Zimbabwe has a ground zero economy

@JeanPaulSartre

Did you know that the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are not the same country? The former is sometimes simply called “Congo” and has a per capita GDP of around $3000. Just wanted to throw that out there because I assumed you were referring to the D. R. C.

As for what people have said, it does seem to be Zimbabwe. What’s interesting is that Zimbabwe is not the least developed country in the world. That would be Somalia as far as I know. Zimbabwe actually ranks higher in development than over 30 countries, yet there are GDP per capita is lower than all of those.

‘Fraid so, @filmfann: minus points for taste, but plus points for wit.

@Jeruba I honestly expected that comment to be moderated, but I have a deep love for bad taste humor, so went with it.

You don’t have to worry about being modded believe me. You can throw a rock and still not be near the edge. Have no fear.

I don’t know if you wanted income per capita, or largest number of starving people, that would be Dafur, Sudan.

There are also 50 million people right here in the United States who are not getting adequate food. Many go hungry at the end of every month just before their government checks are issued.

Who really know? Some say Haiti, some say North Korea and others say some other African countries.
