He’s quite aware of being a Political Animal. Your expectation of a monk is that he is removed from the “world”, probably. Not this one. Do some reading. He’s pretty interesting.

@susanc i’ve met him :)

He’s a reincarnation of a living bodhisattva. That’s something that’s hard to over-rate considering what it means. It amounts to him saying “Even if I was completely and totally enlightened and could escape all suffering, I choose to stay in this body on this Earth and help others instead.”

That’s the foundation for what he does in politics, charity work, speaking engagements, etc..

Personally, I’d like to see more people take that stance.

@mammal : Did your meeting go as described in this?

To answer OP, I do not rate Dalai Lamas. Bad Karma.

He’s over-rated in that many people deify him. I’m quite sure that he would rather see that aspect toned down. It’s ironic that as a Buddhist monk, he works to become less and less “special”, while the world constantly tries to turn him into a rock star.

That has been of some practical advantage in that it gives him the ear of people in power and keeps world attention on his cause, but I’m confident that he doesn’t buy into his own rock star image. He’s just some guy, and he knows that. Spiritually speaking, that’s high praise.

Never met the guy. Seems nice enough.
It seems like people tend to assign values unto him where it may not be warranted.
After seeing some dalai lama hate here, it seems like that energy might be better spent elsewhere.

As what? As a second baseman, or as the religious spokesman for an oppressed and colonized people? You have some critiques? Let’s here ‘em.
