Do you buy combo salt/other seasonings?

Asked by Val123 (12734points) March 7th, 2010

Like, onion salt, garlic salt? I don’t I can’t estimate how much salt I’m using, for one, for another, I know that I’d want more garlic or onion than salt in my food…

Chicken salt…mmmm.

I use Morton’s Nature’s Seasons on everything – meats, vegetables, pastas, etc. – and have never oversalted. If I use garlic in a powdered form, I use garlic powder and not garlic salt, for the very reason you state. It’s more expensive than garlic salt, but that’s because garlic salt is garlic powder mixed with salt. Usually I use fresh garlic and onion, or if I need onion taste, I add powdered onion soup mix.

Yes. I buy every type of seasoning but I don’t cook. Whatever isn’t used get purged every few years and I buy it again.

Celery Salt. A must for anyone who like to BBQ and use spice rubs.

Bacon salt!

That said, I agree with the OP about controlling amounts, more of the other flavors and stuff. I generally add them separately.

Garlic salt, on pizza. Yum.
It’s about seasoning, not exact measurements in a recipe.

I don’t use that much salt—there’s plenty in most foods already—but I love the variations of Mrs dash products.

We buy garlic salt with parsley flakes in it. We use a lot of garlic salt. My favorite to cook with is Mrs. Dash Original Blend. It has tiny bits of carrot, lemon & orange peels, & a lot of other cool stuff that adds to the flavor. I use it on everything. I have to buy a big bottle at Sam’s for it to last.

Not at all. I don’t add salt to any of my meals.

Val123's avatar

@Facade Well, it has it’s uses. It brings out the flavor in food. Also, our body needs salt to function properly, and there is no other way to get it other than ingesting it. What I don’t like is when people use so much salt that you taste the salt over the taste of the food….

Nope. I want to control the amount of salt seperate of my other spices

I like some Goya seasoning blends and am a big fan of certain blends. Italian spice blends. Rosemary, Sage and Thyme blends work for me in a lot of contexts. Spices are pretty expensive so I like to get some more bang for my buck. But with the salt I really want to control the amount so it’s always a direct addition.

@Yetanotheruser – hee! Never noticed that.

BACON SALT! MMMMMM!. My wife is vegetarian, but she likes the taste of bacon. Bacon salt is vegetarian!

Otherwise, I usually like to use the garlic, onion, or whatever, separate from the salt.

I remember when I was a kid my mum would get celery salt and I loved it. When I grew up and moved out, I bought some and it sat in the cupboard unused until I finally threw it out.

@Blondesjon
Celery salt true dat.

@Val123 Yes chicken salt is the bomb. It is only used on hot chips, you often find it in fish and chip shops as an optional extra. Delicious, suss it out if you can.

Val123's avatar

@FishGutsDale I will! I bet my husband will like it! He’s all into all kinds of seasonings, especially hot ones and Greek ones. Me, I’m a salt, pepper and garlic, onion flakes kinda girl.
