I wouldn’t be surprised if it was real but I don’t know what the definitive cause for it is. It may just be a cycle of the Earth getting ready for another ice age.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

In Al Gore’s world it is ;))

Qingu's avatar

Yes. And modern global warming is largely caused by human activity—specifically, burning fossil fuels and releasing lots and lots of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Earth does have natural cycles of heating and cooling. These are more gradual than what is happening now.

“Skeptics” often point to such natural cycles as if they somehow mean humans aren’t causing global warming. This is like arguing that, because your living room is cold in winter and warm in summer, burning a fire in your living room today won’t cause it to get hotter.

I’m agreeing with @mrentropy, another ice age is imminent!

Qingu's avatar

@erichw1504, why do you believe that?

erichw1504's avatar

@Qingu Idk, heard it from some report online that Earth is overdue for it’s next ice age.

CMaz's avatar

Global Warming is real. And, we are part of the cycle of life.

Qingu's avatar

That seems like an awfully silly reason to believe something.

@ChazMaz, global warming, along with our other actions, is causing a mass extinction event, one of only six in Earth’s history.

We aren’t part of the natural cycle of life. Humans alone can radically alter our environment. Humans alone have complex society and technology—and moral systems and responsibilities. I’m not okay with going down in history as the progenitors of Earth’s 6th great extinction event.

And this is to say nothing of the harm global warming will do to human society. It won’t be the end of the world, even in a worst-case scenario. It will be the end of millions of poor people’s towns, farms, and ways of life, however.

Even if you don’t accept that we have a moral responsibility to not cause a mass extinction event, surely you agree that we have a moral responsibility to each other?

We aren’t part of the natural cycle of life?

“Humans alone can radically alter our environment. ”
In other words action and reaction

We as everything else is a product of our environment. That being a life cycle.

Some people just like to label it good or bad.

In the words of Love & Rockets: You cannot go against nature because we’re part of nature, too.

I find it odd that people underestimate the influence humans can have on the environment. I think they can have quite a large influence on it. The Ozone layer is shrinking. That is real it can be seen. And it has only been happening recently because of man-made pollutants.

So, yes, I do “think” global warming is real. But it doesn’t even matter if it isn’t. We still should be taking care of the environment and polluting as little as possible.

“You cannot go against nature, because when you do go against nature, it’s part of nature too.” Just to clarify.

Zaku's avatar

We are part of the cycle of nature, but despite being smart enough to realize that like a too-successful predator, we’re wiping out the conditions that allow us to survive, we are in denial that we’re subject to the natural correction that will happen, i.e. reduction of our population and consumption. If we don’t reduce ourselves, the mechanics of how stuff works will do a number on us.

ucme's avatar

Well of course it is, that’s long since been established as irrefutable fact. It’s what we do about it & how quickly that’s the issue.

Just_Justine's avatar

It is very real. And has been caused by various gaseous omissions that are too many to mention. If you consider daily the amount of toxic waste which is pouring into our atmosphere daily one has to wonder why it did not happen sooner. The loss of the ozone layer has also lead to a loss of protections for humans in the atmosphere which in itself is a broad and complex subject. Industry and subsequent revenue prevents very real monitoring of these omissions. Government too is responsible for encouraging certain industries in order to gain fiscal strength against other countries so use other scape goats as the causes of cancers in humans, respiratory problems and even strokes, which you may have noticed are on the increase.

Global warming as such is not in dispute. Reading thermometers is not rocket science, although even this basic task seems too complex for some of the warriors against science present in the climate change denier movement. The issue is about the influence of human behavior.

Denying evolution is much harder because of 4 billion years of history that has left its mark. Comparative genomics confirms all the evidence. Unfortunately, climate is far more complex. There are only a couple of hundred really good climatologists in the world. A weatherman or woman having studied meteorology is normally not an expert climatologist. Drawing conclusions from a few winters or summers is downright silly. There are many open questions how our climate will be in 2050, but the dangerous signs are strong enough to apply the precautionary principle. We are pumping 100 million years worth of solar power into our atmosphere in a mere 100 years. Every chemist knows that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. The effect can be measured in every lab in the world.

I wonder why the climate change denier movement is much smaller in Europe. It seems to me that the US is very prone to all kinds of denial movements, not only evolution. They form quickly getting loads of funding. The vast majority of climatologists in Asia are also in consensus about climate change.

@mattbrowne I think it’s because the US has anti-intelligence political tendencies, which Europe does not. And anti-intelligence media, which Europe does, but not nearly as bad.

If you have the patience to go about 2.5 minutes in, I think this video contains a good expression of what I mean by John Cleese. Can stop watching about about 5:25 in.

@Zaku – Thanks. I’ll watch it this weekend!
