Have you ever taken Hoodia for weight loss? do you know if it's successful?

Asked by jca (36062points) March 26th, 2010

a doctor i work with told me Hoodia is safe and it’s an effective appetite suppressant. i am wondering if anybody has any first-hand experience taking it and how it was for them.

i want to be positive before purchasing it.

The only surefire permanent means of weight loss is through exercise and paying close attention to diet. You should know that dietary supplements like Hoodia are not FDA-regulated. It doesn’t sound like it even works. If that isn’t enough to deter you, consider this:

Let’s assume (for the sake of argument only!) Hoodia is safe and effective. Do you intend to take these pills forever? If you stop taking them, you’re right back where you started. Just curbing your appetite doesn’t make you healthy. If you’re not eating a balanced diet, you may not be getting the nutrients you need to maintain an acceptable level of health. Attention to diet and regular exercise is a more sustainable solution. When you learn how to eat and exercise, you are learning how to keep the weight off permanently by yourself.

I’m taking Hoodia now to try to kick start some weight loss. It is certainly effective for me as an appetite controller.

I took Hoodia, it is effective. Take it, b/c yea, you don’t want to be dependent on it, but it is great psychologically to begin a new regiment.

You don’t have to take them forever just long enough to get used to eating less (because when you cut out all the crap food and switch to just healthy, you get hungry)

But it does work, and it gives you a sense of encouragement to get help in the beginning.

Also, Tonalin CLA is a monster. That stuff was the best. Look it up, PM me if you want more info on tonalin (just one detail I want to share with you that I wouldn’t on the board, let’s call it a “side effect” but not dangerous at all, just a little inconvenient)

I need Hoodia. I want to drop 20 pounds.

No pills for weight loss. Stay away form them. If you can tell the difference between high- and low-glycemic carbs then you can move to the next step which requires willpower.

When I took them, there was absolutely no difference. It was the same thing as doing nothing.

@mattbrowne @lilikoi I disagree. Eating is all about habits and “yes” at some point you will have to do it on your own accord, but taking hoodia for 3 months while you try to re-teach yourself how to eat wouldn’t be wrong. Also it is a natural supplement so it isn’t like taking the chemical suppressants like ephedrine.

@jca The exception however would be if you took hoodia without trying to change your diet. If you eat fast food 4 times a day and you plan on hoodia helping you cut that down to only 3 times a day then it just won’t work because your habits are just as bad as ever.

If you are going to use Hoodia…you need to find the kind that has NO FILLERS, and is 100 percent Hoodia. That is fairly effective.

But you cannot pop a pill and expect that to do everything. You have to follow a sensible diet, too.
