What well drinks should I order?

Asked by WCUBassBone1 (166points) April 22nd, 2010

My friend is having a happy hour and I finally understand what a well drink exactly is, but I still don’t know what to order other than rum and Coke or gin and tonic…Anything fruity, other than vodka cranberry?

Well drinks are usually best to order when they are mixed flavored drinks to help hide the inferior taste/flavor of the cheaper booze. Daiquiris, Mai Tai’s, margaritas, Tequila sunrises are mainstays of the well drinks. Rum and cokes and gin and tonics I like to go with the call booze as IMO they suffer greatly with well liquor.

Baileys on ice.

@Sophief Baileys is a call… Emmets would be in the well category.

What is a “call booze”?\

edit: and what is “well booze”?

A well is when you ask for whiskey, brandy, scotch, vodka, gin, tequila. It’s what is in the bartenders gun. It’s pre-measured and cheaper brand.

A call is when you ask for a certain brand name that is poured from the bottle. That costs more.

Tequila Sunrise is a staple well order. Some bars don’t consider all mixed drinks well, even if they are made with well liquor, because of the extra ingredients costing the bar more. It really depends on the bar. If it’s a good bar (not a kids hangout spot) then ask the bartender to make you a well drink based on your taste. Tell them if you like sweet, fruity, bitter or bourbon flavors- they’ll make you a good drink.

@liminal Well drinks are the cheapest liquor the bar stocks. Some bars have guns for them, others just have a ‘well’ where they keep the liquor bottles. Call is when you have to specify what brand you want, such as Captain Morgan’s rum or Malibu rum.

Ursus with Sprite.

Tequila with an energy drink. one offsets the other.

Afterwards, you feel well with no hangover.

Typically, “call booze” are the premium liquor displayed on the upper shelves ( hence also refered to as “top shelf”) of the bar across from the barcounter at plain view of the customers. “well booze” are typically staged just behind the counter or the first tier/lower shelves within easy reach of the bartenders by design to avoid handing out premium priced items. . . . as already mentioned, well booze are the least expensive brands for each particular liquor among the selections.

More stuff I didn’t know! Now who can I tell it to?

At some places ‘sex on the beach’ is considered a well. That’s fruity.

njnyjobs's avatar

@La_chica_gomela I would like to go where you say sex on the beach is a well drink . . . anything that has more than one mixer is typically a cocktail more worthy of a “well” label.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@njnyjobs: True! but it can be made with well liquors (unlike SoCo, Baily’s, “moonshine” and Ursus, which isn’t even liquor, it’s beer). But anyway, like I said, it depends on the promotion and the place, and possibly the bartender’s mood.

njnyjobs's avatar

@La_chica_gomela…like I said, I’d like to go there . . .
