Can you replace just the keyboard from a laptop?

Asked by SundayKittens (5834points) April 24th, 2010

I recently laughed so hard that I spit water into my keyboard. All of the keys work except the spacebar and the “x”. Of course, I ripped those two key covers off to clean and now they won’t fit back on.
This is my work computer, by the way.
Can I take it to Best Buy or a similar place and have just the keyboard replaced? Yes, I’ve already tried all the tricks to dry it out and get it to work.

Yes you can. You will often find them for sale on eBay and similar sites.

It ain’t cheap. and you will need to be a little handy, because generally you have to dismount and remount the display in order to replace the keyboard.

Yes, you can get the keyboard replaced. However, unless you have really good manual dexterity, it may be best to let a professional do it.

@dpworkin Not in my experience. There are some models where that is necessary, but I haven’t opened one of those up yet. Most of the ones I’ve dealt with have little clips/catches holding the keyboard in. In fact, you often have to remove the keyboard before you can open the whole thing up.
That makes me wonder what types (brands/models) of laptop you’ve been messing with.

Just had this done to my Dell laptop at work. 5 minutes tops.
