I don’t think you would get half of his benefits. His SS payment would be sent to him each month. What benefits are you hoping to get for your children? I imagine you could apply for Medicaid for health insurance for them if you have no other health insurance.

The best thing you can do is go into the SS office and talk to them about what options you have. The state benefits vary for each state, so they would be able to give you the best information.

Wouldn’t it be better to get a job considering the age of your husband and children? Seems like in 5–9 years someone is gonna need some college money. Social Security ain’t gonna cut it. And your husband will be 71 when your oldest starts college, you may need some work history for when you need to support yourself.

Talk to your local office, they can give you all the information you need and give your more insight into your future options.

Are asking if you will will get a check when he gets his retirement? The answer is “no”.
If he dies then you will get a reduced payment. It is based upon his benefits and your age.
There are work sheets you can check on line.

I hope you worked before. You need to get 10 “points” so you can have your own benefits.

Your question was asked and answered on the Social Security Administration Website

You are entitled to benefits, but it depends on his age and your age. There can also be benefits for your kids. The website has the answers to all of your questions and, as the information is actually coming from the social security administration, you can rely on them to be accurate.

p03kamps, these aren’t the sort of questions that you should be asking at an internet message board. There’s too much at stake, and you need official information rather than casual, anonymous comments or opinions. Please make a visit to your local SSA office.

I offer my thoughts as a CPA who worked as a tax accountant for more than 25 years.
