Is there something wrong with my ear?

Asked by LeotCol (2275points) May 13th, 2010

I keep hearing a buzzing noise every now and again this morning for some reason. It happens in usually 4 or 5 short bursts. Not very loud. But its happened a bit now. Sounds like zzzt zzzt zzzt zzzt. Thats the best I can describe it phonetically I guess.

I was trying to find out what this was online, I’m hoping that it isn’t a bug of some sort inside my ear.

The only one who can give you a real answer is a trained physician who can physically examine you to determine if there is a problem.

That being said, I had a similar problem. After examining me the ENT told me it was a condition similar to an eye twitch, only it happened with the tiny muscles in my ear. Your mileage may vary.

Try to see if you can attract @hearcat, our resident audiologist.

@dpworkin: It’s spelled with a ‘K’ – HearKat :-D

@LeotCol – Yes, I am an Audiologist. There isn’t much I can add to what @YoBob has said. Since you don’t describe any physical itching or discomfort, and since this has presumably gone on for a few days, it seems less likely to be a bug than the muscle spasms.

If the sound is more like a rumbling tremor than a sharp ‘zzzt’ that is what I hear when I have muscle spasms. I tend to her them more when I am tense and have been clenching my jaw. Since you mention hearing them in the morning, I wonder if you might grind your teeth while sleeping?

When I get it, I will massage the temperomandibular joint (TMJ) area to relax those muscles. Applying heat, such as a hot water bottle can also help them relax. If it persists, or if there is any discomfort, dizziness or hearing loss associated with your symptoms, I strongly recommend that you see a physician.

I hope this helps!

Do you think there is something wrong with your ear?

@hearkat (if that really is your name) I am so glad to see you, even if you are bored of helping the otic complainers.

@dpworkin: That is ‘really’ my name on the web!
I wouldn’t describe it as boredom – I just wish that people were somehow compelled to search through old posts to see if their problem and its resolution have already been discussed… as I though that was the whole point of building such Q&A sites. This post is slightly different from the ’How do I unclog my ear’ questions that I’ve answered numerous times, so I don’t mind discussing @LeotCol‘s symptoms at all.

Well, either way, I have missed your shining face!
