What is one item, in the trunk of your car, that you absolutely could not do without?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) May 19th, 2010

The trunk of my wifes Honda looks like the open area of a junk yard. my wife is a semi-packrat and keeps everything….in the trunk of her Honda. one day, we attempted to have a clean-out and only discarded an empty bottle of window clearner. i said, “everything has to go, she said no”. i gave up. so, whats the one item in your cars trunk that you cannot and will not throw away and why?

I keep random bottles of various car fluids in my trunk like washer fluid, antifreeze etc. I just don’t want to run out of some fluid one day, so I have most of them in the trunk to replace right when it runs out.

I am a neat freak, so it is empty for the most part. However, I do keep a winter coat, blanket, flashlight, and first aid kit. I use to live in the mountains and had this fear of flying off a cliff and freezing to death. Hence, the safety gear.

@Blackberry I’m sure you’re already being really careful with your car fluids, but I hope they are stored in really secure containers (or only in really small amounts, preferably both!). I used to keep a bottle of antifreeze in my car boot until very recently, and despite it being stored in an extremely secure container with one of those child-friendly safety caps, it leaked all over my entire car boot, and everything that was in there. Huge, huge fail. Fortunately it didn’t get on any exterior paintwork and I didn’t have anything valuable in my boot at the time, but it was an absolute nightmare to clean up, really nasty stuff. It got all into the well where my spare tyre sits, and I had to soak it all up with newspaper as there was no other way of getting it out. I won’t be doing that again, I felt like such a moron!

Having said that, I do keep 5 litres of petrol (in a safe/approved container) in my car boot, and have had no trouble with leaks yet! This is probably the one thing I wouldn’t want to discard, just because it’s great to have the peace of mind that if I run out of petrol, I’ve got a little extra kicking around back there.

A blanket, an empty gas container and a shovel. Stupidly, I don’t have jumper cables or a first aid kit. Yes, I need to fix that.

I always keep my rollerblades in my car. You never know when you’ll want to go for a skate! You’ll also find a frisbee, just in case.

when i had a car, it was definitely the outrageously large party hats i kept in there. good for every occasion. actually i only took them out once, to wear for a skit we put on in a class in high school, but still. they were always there, should i need to break them out.

In my trunk I have:
7 hoodies.
5 random bottles of fluids mostly oil because my car has a leak.
4 bottles of fake blood.
3 frisbees.
2 boxes of random horse tack equipment.
1 skateboard.
1 box of shotgun shells.
1 notebook with pens stuck in the spirals.
1 empty cooler.
1 first aid kid which is HUGE.
and a set of jumper cables.

I’d like to keep everything, please.

The jumper cables and fluid. I never know when I am going to need to use it, or somebody else needs help. But I would like to think that I am prepared.

In my boot I have two collars and leads for my dogs & a towel to clean them off after their walk. Oh and a bottle of clean water and a bowl for them.

Mickey Rooney, well he tells a good anecdote or two. The funny little fucker never fails to amuse & delight with his tales of a bygone age.Particularly useful on long tedious drives I find.

Jumper Cables. I confess I’m a dolt and end up needing them more often than the average person.

Although my trunk is full as well. I have a huge emergency kit b/c several people in my state were on the news for being stranded and not having the proper gear. Plus I don’t have a cell to call for help.
