How can I buy the iPhone as a gift for someone else, but still take advantage of their 2-year upgrade eligibility?

Asked by NoCatharsis (207points) June 8th, 2010

I would like to buy this for my girlfriend, who is already lined up to purchase the new iPhone, so I would not be taking a discount from her that she would otherwise use on something else. I would just like to make this a bit of a surprise. Thanks.

I don’t quite follow. If she is already “lined up” to get the new iphone, why would you buy her another one?

You could always just let her buy it, and then give her 300 dollars saying it was for the iphone. But remember, diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

Buy an AT&T gift card for $300, and give it to her with “instructions” that it is to be spent on the new iPhone.

@palbertq Sorry, I meant that figuratively. She is due for her 2-year upgrade and she’s all about picking up the iPhone 4. And yeah…diamonds…whew, I think tech gadgets are much more in my area of expertise.

@palbertq & @MrItty I actually bought her the iPhone 3G when it came out two years ago for her birthday, and I did so by giving her the cash for it. She was totally grateful and still loves it now. I just feel lazy when I give cash/GCs as a gift though. But you’re both right – much easier overall to give the cash towards the phone since the account is in her name, and they would probably not let me use her upgrade without her knowledge/identification.
